Ever since my 18th birthday I'd been curious about surface piercings. Piercings had always been my thing, but surface piercings sort of turned me off a bit. That changed after seeing a girl at the bar with both her nape and sternum done (of course I didn't know their names yet.
At A Glance Author Dorkus_Mags Contact Dorkus_Mags@bme.anon When It just happened Artist Eric Studio SoulSurvivors Location Osbourne I decided to search the net and research my newfound piercings. Information on nape piercings was the first thing that I found and soon I was hooked on the thought of getting one for quite some time. My dreams of of getting a nape piercing were soon spoilt as I already knew that I had far too much parental supervision. My mom is one of those extremely observant parents do my nape was an absolute 'no'.
Putting the idea of my nape in the back of my mind I continued my journey to find out all that was known about sternum piercings. Even now I can say that there is certainly not enough information on sternum piercings out there. There's a few known facts about them, but for the most part its easier to go by the experiences that people post.
Through my searching I learned that it'd be hard to sleep without a bra, that I'd have to sleep on my back, and that I might be pierced with a dermal punch and taper. With all this in mind I decided to book a consultation and see if I qualified for the piercing. After a little pinching and my piercer staring down my cleavage, I found out that I indeed qualified for my beloved sternum. I was told about the rejection rate and warned the surface piercings were the most unsuccessful piercings, and then decided upon making my piercing appointment anyway.
For my first appointment I forgot my ID, my second appointment I spelt in and missed, which leads to my final and successful appointment which I waited four long months to make.
Now, flash forward four months to my appointment. Its 10 minutes after 1 when i walk into Soul Survivors, Im late. I wasn't just late I was a bit angry too, sure that I'd miss this appointment like the others. Did I ever get a surprise when I went to the front counter. They had accidentally booked me on a day that Eric wasn't working. There was a small chance that he'd be able to come in and do my surface piercing, but it turned out that he wasn't coming, so they booked me for the first appointment the following day. My sternum would cost $80 with a $20 discount because of the mix-up.
The next day rolled around and I was half an hour early. At about 1/4 to 1pm BJ took me into the room to mark me up. I'd say that the marking took the longest out of the whole process, but then again my bra was crooked and it through him off, as well as my breathing did. When Eric came in he remarked me and eventually found the perfect spot for it. I was then told to sit back in the chair and they laid me down to be pierced. BJ pinched my skin and Eric put the clamp on (the pinching was the most painful part of the whole thing). They let me sit with the clamps on for a few seconds to numb out the skin and then it was time to be pierced.
Eric told me to take a deep breath as he pushed the needle through. I took two breaths but not because it hurt, the sensation of the needle sliding through my skin was just so weird it deserved another breath. I linked the feeling to that of my industrial being slid out of my ear. Little did I know, while I was adoring that weird sensation Eric had put the surface bar in and had begun putting the two discs on (I had opted for flat disc ends rather than the regular bead type ends). That was when he told me that I was great for my first surface piercing, no crying, no jerking, nothing, it was good. He then left the room and told BJ to go through the care with me.
Basically I have to do at least 4 sea salt soaks for 5 minutes every day and clean my piercing with the antibacterial soap (soft soap) that he gave me (which I can wait for a while to do as long as I stick to my sea salt soaks).
It's been three days since my sternum now, and my mom doesn't know I have it done. I don't plan on telling her. I've found that since Im bigger and have large breasts sleeping on my back is not the greatest thing for my piercing. Sleeping on my side or half on my stomach has actually helped it, but I end up waking up on my back anyway. There's a red mark above the top disc of my piercing and one beneath the bottom one from the pressure of the clamps and I really hope they'll go away sooner than later. Other than those things and my sleeping predicament I love it more than any of my other piercings! The placement is great and the discs are mirrored and don't catch on anything and the piercing itself is totally me!
If you're thinking of getting your sternum done research it and find a well known piercer who uses surface bars-It is worth it!!
