It was an average enough day. I was bored so I called my friend who is a piercer to see if he was up to kill some time. We went out for coffee and talked about piercings I was looking at getting in the future and he said that because I had gotten him a lot of business (by referring friends to him for piercings) that he would give me a surface piercing for free. I jumped at the chance to score a really awesome piercing and being somewhat different to the mainstream tongue or eyebrow ring.

We kept talking and we agreed on a horizontal surface piercing on my back, approx. 2 inches down from my bra line. I was a little scared but that made me even more determined to get it done.

I met him at his house the next day and we talked it through one more time just to make sure I really wanted it done. I had brought my friend along for moral support, and she ended up getting her lip pierced. After he cleaned up after my friend, he got all the stuff ready to do me.

He had special 14g needles, if I can remember properly I think they were triple laser cut Teflon needles. My only comfort from him was "they go through skin like butter" which wasn't really a comfort at all.

"Take off your shirt and lie on your stomach" he ordered. I did so, while watching him take the needle out of his container where he kept all his equipment.

He placed his hands on my back and tried to determine where the most appropriate place to pierce was for a good couple of minutes (due to it being over my spine).

After he had drawn the dots on my back I was able to stand up and admire what was soon to be my first surface piercing. When he placed the clamps on my back a sudden wave of nervousness come over me. My friend was sitting next to me and saw that I had tensed up and said "would you like me to hold your hand?". That being said, it sounded like it was one of the nicest things I have ever heard anyone say.

"Deep breath! One...two...." He said and I could feel my friend move uncomfortably as I squeezed her hand tighter than anything else.

"Three!". The pain was unbearable for those first few seconds but after about 5 seconds I started laughing. He mopped up the blood quickly after inserting the jewellery and we sat and waited for the blood to clot.

After I had put my top back on, we decided to go for coffee in the city. I had forgotten that caffeine thins out your blood and my new piercing started to piss out blood. My friend and I quickly ran into the café's toilets and started using toilet paper to try and mop it all up and my shirt became saturated with blood, thank god it was black and mostly hid it.

It bled all the way home on the train and all that evening, it stopped a couple of hours before I decided it was time to go to bed. I had to try and sleep on my stomach and it was the worst trying to get to sleep. I'm one of those people who can only fall asleep on their side so you could imagine how long it took me.

In the morning it was crusty and gross. The internal clotting had since become external and it was stuck to the stem of the jewellery. I got my sister to help wash it in the mornings and nights with Sapederm soap (medicated soap).

I had it for a good 4 weeks before I noticed the little red rings around the 2 little holes. I took it out a day and started using Savlon cream (disinfectant cream) and Sapederm soap for the healing process as well as the occasional salt-water wash. It had migrated since it was initially pierced and I had already made up my mind that if it were starting to reject then I would take it out straight away.

It healed up fine; I still have 2 little scars but nothing terribly noticeable. I kind of miss it but because of its placement I wouldn't get it done again, but I recommend it to anyone who is thinking about getting one done for themselves.

I got this done because I love piercings and I know how to take care of them. I have read many experiences and tips about healing and rejecting and whatnot and I suggest that anyone who is thinking about getting ANY piercing at all should do their homework thoroughly before getting it done. Most of all, be as creative and original as you can!
