So, at the age of eighteen, I decided it was time to move away from the facial piercings and move into more of a body piercing direction. With this came many opportunities – what to pierce? Where? How? It was a whole new world that had just opened up to me.

Now, I should have gone to a professional, but I decided that I was girl enough to take on the pain and decided to do it myself.
The day of, I received a large amount of piercing needles and two sets of clamps from eBay. Anxious, I looked over the 12g needles, excited and nervous about what I was about to do.
I sat down in my computer chair after hopping out of the shower, grabbing a pair of sterile clamps and an individually packaged needle. I also had out a 14g captive bead ring, but it fell and I could never locate it again. Thinking, I grabbed the only jewelry I could keep out of a piercing for a few days – my 16g eyebrow barbell.
Taking a deep breath and holding a mirror, I placed the clamps. I opened up the package with the needle and, after carefully selecting a placement that wasn't too shallow or too deep, started to push it through.
It took two attempts to even start to make any progress – the pain was intense! I kept pushing and pushing away at the needle, and had made no headway in finally getting the piercing. Even when it felt like I could push no harder, the needle wouldn't budge. I stopped to take a look at the place on my thumb that had contact with the needle and saw a small, circular pressure mark on the top of the digit.
Confused, I placed a finger on the opposite side of the clamp. To my amazement, I had already broken the skin on the other side! Motivated, I went at it again and in a few tries the needle went through, despite the scraping sensation that the hollow point of the needle was causing.
I felt great – I was so excited! I took off the clamps and took the bead off of the curved barbell. I slid the jewelry through, and that's where my problems began.
Because the jewelry was so much smaller than the needle, I started to bleed insanely. Blood dripped down the labia I had just pierced, down my legs and to the floor. My jacket, which I was sitting on at the time, was absolutely covered. I was lost as to what to do – normally I never bleed when I'm pierced! I grabbed an old t-shirt and stuck it between my legs, to catch the blood flow. During this time, my hands got so bloody I couldn't even get the end back on the barbell, and I continued to clean up whatever blood I could.
About ten minutes later, the bleeding finally stopped enough to get an end onto the jewelry. By then, my hands, my jacket, and my apartment looked like someone had been brutally murdered. I stood, to see what if felt like, and a large clot of blood fell onto the floor – yuck! I rushed to clean everything up, and had a fun time re-learning that blood stains like nothing else.
Finally cleaned, I went into the stairwell to have a cigarette (since no smoking is allowed in my apartment). Walking was interesting, as I felt a small bit of pressure if I walked with my legs too close together. The result was me walking like I had just completed a rodeo as I went down the hall.
Sitting was another interesting issue. I couldn't cross my legs, because the pressure caused the swelling to overflow into loss of blood, which I couldn't take much more of. Sitting with my legs too close to my body also caused problems, because my pants would press against the fresh piercing. I sat, readjusting, until I finally decided to sit with my legs down and far apart from one another.
The next morning, when I woke up, it felt fine. I took a small hand mirror and checked out the damage. The swelling was still there, but the pain had subsided into an annoying little pinch when I sat wrong. Suddenly, I realized – I had to urinate. Not knowing if this was going to hurt, I headed to the bathroom and proceeded on a learning experience. There was no pain, and I was quite relieved (no pun intended!).
All in all, my 2 day old labia feels great, and I can't wait to do another! I can easily see myself getting addicted to this type of piercing, especially with their quick healing time! And, hopefully, my boyfriend likes it just as much as I do – this is going to be a surprise to him!
