I remember opening my first Seventeen magazine, I was 13 and seeking an identity of self, staring back at me in the issue was a cute girl, mind 20s, sticking out her tongue to show off a flower-topped tongue ring. From that moment on, I knew there was something I needed to explore, outside of school and friends and my usual self, there was something inside of me that felt wild and wanted to be 'different'. I talked my mother into letting me get a couple of facial piercings before I turned 18, but I always told myself that one day I will get something she'll never know about, and would certainly never approve of!

The week after my 18th birthday, I decided it was time to be bold and try something new. Nervous as I've ever been prior to a piercing, I held my breath and walked into my favorite local body piercing shop. I knew the Artist, Max, she had pierced me several times before, and was always very friendly and approachable. I went up to her, and very quietly whispered "I want you to pierce me... (motioned) 'down there'."

Max ushered me back into the piercing area/room. I sat on this big medical bed/table and focused on my breathing, I was craZy-nervous! Max asked me what I was thinking about, and I told her I would like my hood to be pierced. She asked if i wanted it pierced vertically or horizontally? I had no clue, and chose the 'more popular option'. She made me feel so comfortable about the decision and was so professional about everything. She said to me (and was obviously considering my sensitive 'good girl' image and personality I'm known for) "okay, I'm going to leave the room while you undress, just take off your pants and underwear" and I gave this nervous 'i don't wanna!' sigh and she said "if it makes you feel any better, I don't want to be down there just as much as you don't want me to be down there!' I laughed and felt a little more comfortable. When she returned, she took a long Q-tip and applied a numbing agent (Novacane?) to my clitorial /hood area and told me to keep the coooold gel in contact with the area for a couple of minutes. She brought in a case of jewelry and explained the benefits of certain styles. Since hoops are easy to clean, and leave room for swelling, I chose a small hoop and a pretty pink ball.

She removed the q-tip from the area, sat down on a stool in front of me, and told me to lay back and relax. She said she would explain everything she was doing to be aloud. I felt the awkward clamps pinch my hood as she let me know she was about to pierce. My whole body tightened up at the thought of it, and she told me to calm down and said I'm actually getting one of THE quickest and easiest piercings. I took a deep breath and relaxed my mind and my body completely, she readjusted the clamps... then said 'okay take a deep breath in...(pierce)...and DONE!" I was honestly in disbelief, I hardly felt anything at all!!

The closest thing to describing what the actual piercing feels like is someone giving you a small paper-cut on your genitals...it was so much more pleasant and enjoyable than I ever imagined, and by FAR the quickest and most painless piercing I've ever had! She ran the needle & jewelry through and fit the ball in securely. I was so ecstatic when I left the shop... the experience, the professionalism, the simplicity, it was so much better than I ever imagined. I felt like telling everyone I saw "hey, check this out!!"

The piercing was mildly sore for 2 days, and it was mostly just my dramatic thoughts of me ripping it that made the healing process frightening. I was very careful with it, very cautious about jeans, lacy panties, oral sex, and my OBGYN visit (which I found out that OBGYN's are not impressed with these sort of 'surprises')! I kept the piercing for a mere 3 months, the piercing itself was fun and required hardly any maintainance, but I was disappointed at the performance and impact the jewelry made during sexual intercourse, so I decided to retire it. The hoop was a large gauge and extremely difficult to remove, it took my boyfriend with a pair of pliers to get the ball out. Had I tried putting a barbel in, things may have worked out differently. But I was getting eager to take it out so I could masturbate normally again. I am proud of myself for doing something so unique and different, it was a fun toy and interesting to play with. I'll always carry this experience with me, and I have a great conversation starter! hehe
