the challenge i'm glad i took |
| ||||||||||||||||
When I started thinking about getting my fourth piercing, my boyfriend jokingly challenged, "why don't you just pierce your clit?" At first I was appalled by the suggestion. I'd never even considered a piercing like that. However, I was not going to let the challenge go. I went to BME and started reading experiences and looking at the pictures. After my second visit to BME the idea of a genital piercing was not going to escape undone.I first heard of Brian Skellie, owner of the Piercing Experience, one night on this radio talk show that I listened to in order to fall asleep. He was talking about his business and taking calls from people with questions about their piercings. I thought he was very knowledgeable and impressive. Two years later, my friend Carmen got her tongue pierced in some incredibly unsanitary conditions and scare tissue was beginning to take over her tongue and bury the jewelry. I remembered Brain, and his business and I had heard that it was just down the street. Carmen and I called Brian and she described her tongue. Brian had to remove Carmen's original piercing and gave it time to heal naturally. Then once the scar tissue had completely vanished, he repierced it himself. Carmen's tongue didn't even swell this time.
Needless to say Brain gained a two new fans. Since then, Carmen and I visited him several times. He pierced my cartilage- my third piercing, and we brought along some other girls from the college to get pierced as well. They all loved the job he had done. I trusted Brian, but it took a lot of guts to call him to talk about a genital piercing. It was incredibly nerve-wracking. As soon as he heard me voice he could tell I was nervous and upset. He calmed me down completely and had me tell him what I was thinking of. I told him that I was considering some sort of genital piercing, either hood or clit. He suggested the vertical hood because of its benefits for sensation. I also mentioned something about some horror stories on BME where girls' legs were strapped into stirrups and large painful clamps were used. He reminded me that he didn't uses any clamps or restraints in his procedure. Brain's mission statement is to make everything as safe simple and gentle as possible. And he accomplishes it beautifully. He seemed excited and enthusiastic that I was interested in the piercing, and his enthusiasm totally convinced me. I hung up the phone calm but incredibly excited about getting a vertical hood piercing. The next day I collected a group of friends for support and headed over to the Piercing Experience.
First Brian took me alone back to his piercing room. There was a large flat table and a doctor's stool, and a sink and cabinet like you would see at a doctor's office. He washed his hands with special antibacterial soap and applied sterile gloves while I removed my jeans and underwear. He had me lay back on the table and put my knees up where I was comfortable. He briefly examined my hood, and told me that a vertical hood would be perfect on me. As I dressed, Brian explained that I had adequate skin to support an initial large gauged barbell. So we decided on an eight-gauge barbell. All of the jewelry Brian carries is made of material that is approved for surgical implant procedures, such as a brain plate or your gramma's fake hip. I went back outside in the waiting room while he autoclaved the jewelry and needles he would use in the procedure. When my jewelry was finished in the autoclave, Brain once again led me back to the same room as before. This time Carmen came along to hold my hand. Once again I undressed while Brian washed his hands and arms and put on sterile gloves that had been autoclaved along with the jewelry. I lay back onto the table and Brian positioned my skin to expose my hood. Then he explained to me that he was placing a hollow metal tube under the hood to guide the needle and protect my clitoris. I felt cold metal next to my skin, and then he added pressure so I could feel where the needle was going to go through. He held that pressure on my hood and asked me to breathe deep breaths together we all said, "IN and OUT, and IN and OUT. After about five breaths I felt a sharp pinch similar to a shock of static electricity. I was so surprised by it that I yelled out and according to Carmen levitated about three feet off the table. Not that I believe her--. As soon as I cried out, I realized that I didn't even feel anything anymore. I didn't experience the growing dull pain associated with my other piercings. In fact I didn't feel a thing. Brian cleaned the blood from around the piercing and told me to be careful when I showered to not let it get too wet. Other than that my healing instructions were.. "Don't touch it, and let your body heal itself." He also told me that now I was a "complete and total toy", which remains my favorite complement to date. After I got dressed, I went back out into the lobby where my other two anxious friends were waiting. They had heard me yell, and were surprised by my smiling face. I still did not feel any pain at all. I only noticed that I was aware of that region of my body and I could feel heaviness there from the new jewelry and I could feel the tightening of the skin around the metal bar. The piercing was completely healed in about a week. And I didn't touch it once. Now I have had it for about five months and I'm loving every second of it. IF anyone in the Atlanta area is looking to get a piercing, I completely recommend Brian and the Piercing Experience. Check him out at http://www.piercing.org and best of luck.
