I am a 56 year old man. Three nights ago I pierced my nipples.

Why did I do it? I've thought about it ever since I realized that my arousal is increased if my nipples are pinched, clamped, or bitten during sex. I haven't questioned that to deeply; I just accept it. My wife accepts it, too.

For that reason she was in favor when I suggested piercing. In fact, she made an appointment to have it done professionally as a birthday present three weeks ago.

I researched the subject online and learned as much as I could about it. During my search I looked at what jewelry was available. I found that 'do-it-yourself' kits were available. They all ran about $12 - $15 with shipping included.

When I asked my wife how much she was paying for the professional job I told her to cancel the appointment. We could get a kit and use the balance of the $75 for a birthday dinner!

Okay, I admit it was also a matter of, "I'd rather do it myself." I'm stubborn that way about a lot of things. My wife offered to do it but I told her if it got screwed up I wanted it to be my fault. So three nights ago: It may seem less than courageous, but I fortified myself with a few drinks. I told my wife, "Let's do it!"

I washed my hands and nipples with antibacterial soap and put on the 'procto gloves'. She got an ice cube out and wrapped it in a cloth. I held it to my right nipple until I started to fear frostbite. Some accounts I've read say that the second one hurts less. Others disagree. My right nipple is the more sensitive so I figured on getting the most pain out of the way first.

There were two possible problems with the kit I ordered. First, my nipples are simply not large enough to make the forceps useful, unless I pinched the entire nipple up. That left the part I wanted pierced as loose as if there were no forceps. Fortunately, there were rubber corks in the kit.

The second 'problem' was that the half inch CBR rings that came with the kit seemed to be too much of an arc to go easily through a straight hole. I thought that, later on -- after healing -- they might be useful. So I got a pair of inexpensive stainless steel bars to start with.

So it was the moment of truth. My nipple was as numb as it was going to get. I was nervous but determined. I backed the nipple with the cork and pushed the needle through until it contacted the cork. I looked at my wife. She asked what was wrong. I guess my expression wasn't the one she expected.

I grinned at her. "It hurt less than when you bite it!" I told her. She swiped the bar with alcohol and fed it into the hollow needle. I held the nipple and pushed it through. "One down and one to go," I announced.

The most difficult part was not the way the nipple felt, but the feeling of holding the needle while it penetrated my flesh. All the cinematic images I've seen of people stabbing other people popped into my head. What, I wondered, must that feel like?

I eagerly iced down the other side. Maybe I was too eager. Maybe it was just that the first one was beginning to radiate more pain. At any rate, the second one hurt much more than the first. I know I was eager to get it done before I lost my nerve. As a result, it was crooked.

The 'inside' end of the bar angled away from my breastbone. I looked down at it and decided I couldn't leave it that way. I decided not to bother with the ice. Removing the bar I picked up the needle and carefully lined it up. The second time it was straight. It hurt. But still not as much as I had expected.

I immediately went to the kitchen and mixed up some saltwater in a shot glass. I cupped each nipple in turn with the rim of the glass and bathed them. The water turned pink. It was done.

I have read that it can take up to six weeks for them to heal. I won't know until then whether it has the desired results. At any rate, I'm glad I did it. Just like when I got my first -- and so far, only -- tattoo four years ago, it's a life experience. I'm still looking for just the right subject for my next tattoo. And I'm thinking my wife might enjoy it if I have a barbell through my frenum!
