On my 21st birthday, I decided I wanted to get my nipples pierced. I think it looks completely sexy. At this point in time, I had no other tattoos or piercings, so I really didn't know what to expect & wasn't nervous at all. I brought along 3 friends for support. I took a "before" picture with a Polaroid...just so I'd remember my unpierced nipples.

First he covered my nipples with a germ-killing wash (It was bright yellow. He joked they looked like pasties, he he). Next he pinched my nipples to get them hard. The artist piercing me told me I had "inverted nipples" and that there was a high chance of rejection. I freaked out because I always thought my nipples were quite normal and never had any complaints! I think of "inverted" as going inside your body. He said he uses that term when he doesn't feel the tip of the nipple (when it's hard) is long enough to pierce. He explained he would instead pierce the areola skin on each side of my nipple's tip.
The first part was done with a needle. WOW it hurt!! It was about the worst pain I've ever felt, but it only lasted 4 or 5 seconds so it was bearable. You could really feel the tissue getting ripped. He worked quickly I'm sure but it seemed like forever and the pain was very sharp and intense...really focused. Just when I thought I couldn't take it anymore, he was done. Compared to this, him sliding the captive ring in was painless. The other side hurt just as badly, even though I was prepared for it. I couldn't believe how quickly it all went...suddenly I had nipple rings!
Aftercare was pretty easy. I did a few warm saltwater soaks. For this I took large cups (like a large drink you'd get at Taco Bell) and filled them with warm saltwater. Then I bent over until my nipple was submerged and the cup was snugly fitted to my breast. I'd lift them up and kind of hold them for a few minutes until the water got less warm while I watched television. I also washed them several times daily with antibacterial soap. I used Dial.
About 20 minutes after I got them done, the endorphins wore off and they hurt really badly. This lasted about 2 days. By the end of the week they weren't sore anymore, and could be touched without much pain.
I got pierced in July and ended up taking them out the following April. Sadly the sides where they were pierced never fully healed. They were always kind of reddish looking, occasionally would scab and often I'd get small bumps on the side where fluid was being retained. I decided the scabbing kind of detracted from the sexiness! Because they didn't really heal I never had the opportunity to change rings. I was afraid since they were irritated it would worsen the irritation to take them out and put in new rings. When I took them out there were small, perfect holes and it made me so sad to say goodbye to them. But, despite everything (massage in the shower, saltwater soaks, gentle movement of the ring, NO movement of the ring, etc.) they still weren't healing. I decided I just wasn't the right candidate for them and took them out.
Since my piercing I've found that lots of people with smaller/inverted nipples get their nipples pierced, and that this is often a great way to make them extend more from your body. My nipples certainly extend more now then they did before. I'm not sure he had to pierce them on the sides the way he did. They were several centimeters from the actual nipple and I think he could've gotten them closer, or even on the nipple. I'm not an expert by any means, but the process was very rushed and in the subsequent research I've done I've seen several successful pictures of nipple piercings on people with nipples far less extended than mine. Perhaps with more preparation and specialized or adjusted jewelry or piercing equipment it could have been a more successful piercing. While you should always listen to your piercing artist, if you have smaller or inverted nipples, I would take the process slowly and carefully...do some research, talk to your artist about your concerns and co me up with a plan that you're happy with. I'd like to try it again with getting the actual nipple pierced, but my previous rejection experience makes me kind of scared to. However, I do not regret getting it done the first time. It was important to me to feel the pain I felt, and know that I could willingly do it. It was also just neat to have nipple rings for awhile! I'd really like to hear back from people who have maybe had to have 2nd nipple piercings, or people with smaller or inverted nipples, and see what other options there are. If you're thinking about getting your nipples pierced I would definitely say GO FOR IT!!! They look great and increase sensitivity, too!
