Belly buttons. I don't see them useful for anything but piercing. Well, at least not mine.

A belly button piercing is something that I have wanted since I started high school. It may be mainstream, and what teenage girl wouldn't want one, but I thought they were very cute. It also made a difference that my best friend (Jessica) was always telling me how cute I would look with mine pierced.

The problems with getting one were:

1) Getting the okay from my mom (and possibly step dad)

2) Getting the money to afford it.

3) Getting the courage to go to a studio and actually do it.

The first problem that got sorted out was the okay from my mom. I told my mom how bad I wanted one, and after a few weeks consideration, she finally said I could.

Next, I now had the problem of finding money for it. It took a few months, but Jessica told me about this place where I would be able to get it done for only $25. The only catch was the the piercer was a student. My mom didn't care after talking to the woman, and I didn't care as long as I left with a ring in my belly button.

And as for the third little problem I had, it sorted it's self out. When Jessica called me and told me about the 25 dollar piercing opportunity, this was at a certain studio where I got the piercing.

My mom got the number for the studio, and called, and made my appointment right after Jessica's. We waited a few days for the appointment to come, and it finally did. My mom and I got ready, and we were on our way to Jessica's house where we would follow her dad to the studio.

The trip to the studio was torture. The traffic was horrible, which made my mom grouchy, which made me grouchy when I was already scared about the piercing I was going to be getting.

We finally got to the studio, and I was more scared as I stepped into the place. I looked around and saw that it was very sterile, clean-looking. I met the owner of the studio, who was very nice, and Laurie Allan, who was going to be piercing my belly button. Jessica and I sat and looked at tattoo designs as our parents filled out our forms giving us permission to get the piercings. Jessica's dad was finished filling out her form, so he paid and left. Soon after, my mom was finished as well. She gave me the money for the piercing, and also left.

It was now Jessica, her sister (who was getting her nose pierced), and me. We went into the room where the piercings would be done. Jessica's sister (Christina) sat down first and had her nose pierced. Then it was time for Jessica's belly button to be pierced. We were both incredibly scared, and were worse after the nose piercing. They got the needle ready, and Jessica was told to lay down. She did, then asked me to hold her hand. As hers was pierced, I wasn't able to look, knowing it was going to be happening to me very soon afterwards. I just held her hand and looked away, and before I knew it, it was my turn.

This is when I really started to freak out. Laurie Allan marked the spots she was going to be piercing through, and she had the owner of the piercing studio check it. She had to move the top hole just a little bit, and we were all ready. I was then told to lay down, just as Jessica had, and they put the clamps on. The clamps weren't bad at all, but still the scariest part (I would say) of this whole ordeal. I was closing my eyes the whole time, but I could hear everyone talking so I knew when the needle was going through. It went by very quickly, and I won't say that it didn't hurt. It was more uncomfortable than painful, however.

After the piercing, Laurie Allan walked Jessica and me to Christina's car, where she was waiting. In the car ride home, I started to feel a little sick, and dizzy. So Christina took us all to McDonald's, where I had a little bit of food with water. I was feeling some better after eating, so we went to Rite-Aid to get what we needed for our new piercings (band-aids so they don't get caught on anything while we sleep, dial antibacterial foaming soap).

It is now about a month later, and I love my piercing as much as I did when I first got it. It is still red around the top of it, it pusses sometimes (which I heard is normal), and it hardly ever hurts. I have already changed the jewelry twice before. I put in a new ring that Jessica let me borrow for the day, and took it out before I went to sleep. It couldn't have been easier to do.

If you're thinking about the belly button piercing, definitely do it. Very easy after care, it looks great, and it isn't too painful. You'll love it.
