Growing up in a very much catholic household, I was very skeptical to many body modifications. I lived with my Grandma, who was very religious and kept a wise eye on my actions. She, at the time, thought the only thing that was holy piercing-wise was ears once.

Anyways, people left and right were getting piercings and tattoos at school. I just thought they were cool, but not for me. Besides, I was always told that I was more pure and classy without the piercings/tattoos.

Feb 19, 2003 I found this web site [bme]. I cruised around, looking at things I didn't know were possible. I [attempted to] read all of the stories. The stories that struck me as the most unique were the navel piercings.

After awhile I confronted my grandmother about getting another piercing. When she asked what I wanted to get pierced I chickened out to her and said my ears double pierced. She was hesitant, but she said okay. We never really talked about it again since this year. I never got my ears double pierced. I guess I was too troubled to ask my grandma for what I really wanted to get pierced.

For my 18th birthday, I decided to be daring and talk my grandma into letting me get my naval [standardly] pierced. She said that she has no control over what I do to my body since I'm 18. I wasn't expecting that out of her mouth. She is so strict, but she just softened out of nowhere.

As for my studio...I asked around. At work, everyone told me to go to John at Lancelot Piercing because he was awesome and made people feel comfortable while you were there. At school, they told me the exact same thing. I called John three weeks ago to ask him some routine questions about cleanliness etc. He was really nice on the phone, which made me even calmer.

Originally, I was going to get it pierced the day of my birthday. On that day, my dad surprised me by coming into town and ruined all of my plans. I was so pissed because I had waited a month or so and I was ready to get my piercing. I decided I'd do it the Monday after my birthday since I was off of school. It turns out that John works at another place on Mondays, and I couldn't get pierced that day. I planned to get it done the next Saturday [Feb. 26]. This holding off of getting pierced was actually a good thing. I found out that if my dad [who lives in Virginia] had seen it, he would have flipped. I guess he wasn't into piercings like I thought he was. On the next Saturday, everything just fell into place and it was live heaven.

My friend was getting her nose pierced, so she came with me. We went yesterday at around 2:00 after eating at Wendy's. We knew we had to eat or we would probably have passed out. When we got there, we filled out some paperwork. My boyfriend came with me to see everything get done. I laid on the table in John's "office" which seemed very friendly, doctor-like, and clean. I was so nervous and sweating. John said there was nothing to worry about and I just needed to relax. He pulled up my shirt to uncover my bellybutton, and prepped the area while talking to me the whole time. I felt so relaxed by then, and he said it would be fast. I breathed in, and he stuck the needle half way through. I felt a burning in my skin like when I get sunburn there, but not any real pain. I breathed out and then in again, and John sled the needle all of the way though. That hurt for about [seriously] 1 second. The part that hurt [A TINY BIT!] was when he put in the jewelry HE picked (a yellow-balled captive ring..oh well). [They have to use rings at Lancelot Piercing because they claim it's "easier" to clean.] After that, I got up and I felt awesome. I was on a high from the piercing and I couldn't quit looking at it and smiling. After all, I'd have to live with this piercing the rest of my life.

My friend then got her nose pierced, and she barely flinched. She said she wasn't scared after watching my piercing because I didn't have a big reaction.

Walking around after the piercing was fine, just bending over sucked badly. I cleaned it last night in the shower with bactine and dial soap. John told me not to do a sea salt soak unless it becomes infected. Today is the second day. When I woke up, I didn't even notice it was there. It doesn't hurt at all, but I'm not going to screw with it. My grandma wanted to see it, and she said it was really cute. So, I guess I have changed my views as well as hers. I'm planning on getting my next piercing soon! To say the least, I'm pierced and loving it!! I recommend it to everyone. Do it for yourself, because you deserve it!
