I never wanted my navel pierced before. Its such a typical teenage girly type of thing to do, and I never wanted that to be me. Well, I caved. Im not exactly sure what made me want one, but I got restless I guess. I needed a change and a navel piercing was perfect for me. My job isn't too crazy about facial piercings, and neither are my parents for that matter lol. I needed something that could be easily hidden, and I already had my nipple done. So, my mind was set on my navel.

He was reluctant to give in, since he had told me that it hurt him a lot and it's a pain in the ass to take care of and he didn't think they looked so good. I whined and complained enough until he finally gave in. Now I just had to get the needle and jewelry for it.
Originally, I planned to use the 16g needle that I used for the nipple, but when I went in search of jewelry for it I discovered its pretty hard to find 16g barbells for a navel piercing. Also not a great idea anyway. I headed into the city to a place in Chinatown that sells piercing and tattoo supplies. I decided on a barbell instead of a ring because I heard they get caught on things less. They had a great selection of navel rings, but I wasn't sure what style of barbell I wanted. Nothing too big or flashy that I'd get annoyed with since I had to keep it in for a few weeks. I caved eventually and just got a 3/8 14g plain silver barbell with silver balls. I figured if anything, I could just take the balls off and switch them with others and not have to remove the bar.
I had to wait two more days on Valentines Day til my boyfriend would finally do it for me. It just kind of happened, we were sitting around his house talking to his family and he asked me if I wanted to do it now. I said yes, and the nervousness started to set in. I guess I had too long to think about the piercing, how much it would hurt, etc. I had read lots of stories here on BME to see different peoples experiences, and what to clean it with and what to expect with it. It helped me, but it also made me more nervous. But now the time had come.
I stood up in front of him while he sat on a chair to be eye level with my navel. He marked a few spots til we decided which one was best. I didn't really realize it before but I have a strange looking navel. Its kind of like a swimming pool, with a deep end and a shallow end :) Its pretty much in the middle as it can get so I was happy. He clamped it and started to insert the needle. It hurts. It hurts like hell. Im a baby when it comes to pain and needles, but damn. Ouch. It felt like it took forever for him to push the needle all the way through and then to push the bar in and screw the balls on. I started to get very light headed and wanted to throw up, though I didn't, and begged him to hurry up so I could go to the bathroom. I looked down and saw a bit of blood, but it wasn't much. He told me I didn't bleed until he pulled the bar through. I ran to the bathroom and sat on the floor for a few minutes and drank soda til I felt better. It was pretty sore, but I was really happy that I did it.
I came home shortly after that to sleep. I do sleep on my stomach and tried not to at first, but decided to hell with it, I needed to get to sleep. It wasn't too bad at all, I guess I didn't move around too much during the night. It was sore, but I figured it would've been sore no matter how I slept. I told my parents the next day... well, they weren't pleased with my decision, but in reality Im 18 and its my body. Later on, they got used to the idea and made fun of it instead. They just wished I had told them before I did it. They were worried about infection and sterilization, etc. My brothers really liked it though.
Its almost a week later and I like it more each time I look at it. It hasn't given me too much crust, but its red around the holes a little bit and sensitive. Thankfully I haven't hit it too much. Id say its healing nicely, I can only hope it continues well. I've been washing it in the shower with dial soap but trying to stay away from cleaning it too much. I spray bactine on it every once in awhile.
For anyone thinking about this piercing, I say go for it. I never thought it would be for me, but it looks pretty hot, and its not too cutesy-puke after all :)
