I'm 21 and have been experimenting in body modification for years. I've always had a huge interest and love for piercing, even though I have a limited number of my own (I have had my nose done for six years and my belly button for longer than that off and on).

For the past year I had begun to develop an "itch" for a new piercing, and while searching endless on the internet had grown to truly love the Monroe/ Madonna. I work a relatively conservative job, and spent a lot of time debating the consequence of what may happen at work if I strolled in with another hole in my face.

I continued to debate it in my head, researching healing times, possible problems, and reading testimonials of those who had already gotten the Monroe/Madonna. Eventually in approximately September I began to give it serious consideration, I brought it up numerous times with my boyfriend, and never got much of a response so I continued to hold off.

Around the beginning of the New Year the itch for the Monroe grew endlessly stronger, I brought it up to friends who all agreed that it would look good, and continued my research. Finally I got my big break it was two weeks before my 21st birthday and my boyfriend was incredibly stressed about what to get me, he finally cracked and told me he would get me "whatever I wanted" if only I would give him a hint. I took this opportunity to ask for the Monroe. He agreed and I was finally prepared to get my new piercing.

Although my boyfriend had agreed to finance my new piercing he was slightly skeptical of my choice for a present, however he would not back out on his promise, the day of my piercing he took me out to a great Italian dinner before walking the 5 minutes to the piercing salon.

Walking in I was surprisingly calm, we had not booked an appointment so I had to wait a little longer for a walk in appointment. When I went in to the piercing room I dragged my boyfriend with me, The women who would be piercing me explained the procedure and got me to rise with a mouth wash to cleanse my mouth, she then proceeded to clean the outside of my face. After the cleaning process was done she took a pen and marked a spot on my face for the positioning and asked if the positioning was ok. I took a look in the mirror and agreed the positioning; it was finally time for the piercing!

The Piercer leaned me back in my chair and unwrapped the needle from it's plastic she pulled back my lip and told me to close my eyes and take a deep breath, she then shoved the needle through from the inside to the outside. I was amazingly surprised at how painless it actually was, I jumped slightly when the needle went through, but other than that it was virtually painless.

The piercer placed the jewelry in (which was also painless) the only difficult part of this was it was hard to get the little ball on because my lip had began to swell slightly.

After the jewelry was in place I was finally able to see my new piercing, I loved it right away! Before I left the piercing room, the Piercer when through the usual spiel regarding the cleaning processes After that I was free to go on my way, incredibly happy with my new piercing.

When I débuted my piercing the general consensus was good! The majority of people liked it including my bosses at my job (this was quite the surprise to me as I figured I would be fired!) The only people who seemed to be slightly skeptical of it were my parents (though they grew to like it) and my boyfriends mom (who I think just grew to accept it!)

In terms of healing, the healing process has (so far) been quite simple. The night of the piercing it was slightly swollen but after that it was painless and simple to look after. I have been following the directions quite carefully though rinsing and cleaning the piercing site.

The only problem I endured was at the three week mark when I tried to change the piercing to a shorter post, this is definitely not a task I would recommend people trying on their own as it resulted in me developing a huge red mark around the piercing site.

My experience with the Monroe/Madonna has been nothing but good, in terms of healing time and pain I would consider it the best piercing I have ever had (though it is not completely healed) For people who are considering this piercing I would say go for it! it's a fun piercing and is simple to look after, it was definitely a worth while Birthday present, and my boyfriend also LOVES it!
