A few weeks ago I saw a bulletin on Myspace from one of my friends who is a piercing apprentice saying, "Donate your flesh! Get a free piercing!" I read the list of piercings he was giving away and saw "lip" on there, so I immediately wrote him.

Now, I have had my eyebrow pierced for 15 months and it still hasn't healed. In fact, it has migrated a lot and it still gets infected and sore! It was my first piercing, and I know I did a lot of things I wasn't supposed to do, like touching it with dirty hands, bumping it, and switching out the jewelry after only three weeks! I have known for a long time that I needed to take it out, but I hated the idea of not having a facial piercing anymore! I mean, I am so used to seeing my face with some kind of metal in it! So I'm about to take it out so I can have it repierced. I was always happy with the way my eyebrow looked, and I was never really interested in any other facial piercings (other than a tongue ring when I was a teenage which I never got). I had been told I would look good with my nostril pierced, but I couldn't see myself getting that, especially since it is now so popular among all of the sorority girls! So I had never really thought about what else I would like to get (other than several ear and cartilage piercings), but I figured, why not just get something anyway?

So I asked him if I could get a labret and he said that would be fine. Then I started getting excited about it! We made the appointment weeks in advance, and today was finally the day.

I knew I wanted to get a stud initially because it would be easier to heal. I didn't care what it looked like, and I think it is a 3mm ball on a 14G. My eyebrow piercing hurt like hell, so I was really hoping that the labret wouldn't hurt as bad.

Since he was an apprentice, my friend that had come along so she could watch wasn't allowed back because there had to be room for another apprentice and the owner to observe. Even with all of that stress, I think he did a great job. He was very calm and professional. He gave me a lot of information about the aftercare procedures including what to do and what not to do (the do nots are almost more helpful I think!) For example, I had read online that you should use non-scented antibacterial soap to clean the piercing, but he said that was bad because it would kill the good bacteria in your mouth! Be careful what you read on the internet! But of course, every piercer is going to have aftercare procedures that they swear by that maybe others disagree with. You really have to see for yourself. So anyway, after the serious stuff, he marked where the piercing would go, I approved, and it was time to start.

I laid down on the table and concentrated on my breathing. He applied the clamp and checked to make sure everything was aligned. After several deep breaths in and out, he stuck the needle through. It was hard to tell when it went in, but I could tell it took a little while. It started to go crooked, but he fixed it. It really just felt like a sharp pinch. What a relief! Much less pain than the eyebrow, and it probably helped that I had taken a pain pill before I came in! haha I got up and looked in the mirror, and much like when I had my eyebrow done, I wasn't sure if I liked it! I thought it was slightly off-center. I was happy it was done though, gave my piercer a very generous tip (it was a free piercing), and went to see what my friends thought (it turns out they were there getting tattoos). They all said it rocked. That made me happy.

Afterwards I went to see another friend at work. "That's so hot on you." Excellent.

I went home and looked in the mirror again. The swelling had gone down some, and it wasn't as off-center as I thought it was. It's still swelled and sore, but it's not too bad. As for the placement, I'm sure it will be fine in a few days.

So now I can't wait for it to heal! I have all kinds of jewelry picked out already. Horseshoes, rings, spiked studs, claws, etc. And now I'm planning my next piercing. I'm thinking cheeks. I just love the way they give you dimples! So cute!
