Hello to all you readers out there in internet land. I had been debating for a few months now on getting a Monroe/Madonna piercing. I had seen pictures on the internet and saw people out and about that had them. I thought that it would be soooo cute.

However, I'm not fond of the pain sometimes associated with them. I always get that rush of adrenaline! Whenever I'm considering a new piercing/tattoo, I have a month of going "I'm not sure." and then a few days of going "Oh My God! This is gonna hurt." but eventually, I'll get on with it.
Anyway...I was down to my few days of thinking "Oh My God! This is gonna hurt!" but I had decided to get on with it anyway. I had scouted out several shops in the area and was just waiting on the right time and the right shop. Well, a friend e-mailed and said she needed a place to crash for the night...and SURPRISE...her beau does tatts and piercings. What she left out...was that he didn't have his own shop and would actually be doing it in my living room. YES, I know this is unfolding as a nightmare, but don't think that. We met up with them in town, went out to eat, went and purchased what we need for the piercing and then headed home.
I was really kinda anxious to have to done in my living room. BUT...we made sure everything was sterile! I put it off as long as I could, but they were growing tired and wanted to go to bed. So, I jumped up, went and brushed my teeth and used Listerine. I walked back into the living room and Jason told me to sit on the couch. Now my friend was going to "assist" with piercing and hold the clamps. well...I kept smiling and giggles (nervously) so the clamps kept sliding off. Jason couldn't see either, so I had to lay down on the couch. I was really kinda scared at this point. we finally got my lip positioned and he asked if I was ready. I said "yah." and before I could think...the needle was through my lip!
It didn't really hurt. I felt the pinch as the needle initially went through my lip...but it was weird. It seemed that I could feel the needle going through each layer of tissue in my lip. Not like the sharp feeling of pain, but this weird feeling.
Before I knew it, the needle was out and the jewelry was in and it was cute. I cleaned it and then went straight to bed. The next morning when I woke up, it was kinda sore, but wasn't really swollen. Now...due to the nature of my job (EMS dispatcher) I have to talk a lot. The next night at work...my lip started to swell...BIG time. I managed to kinda keep the swelling to a minimum with ice, but I knew I was gonna have to call somewhere for some aftercare instructions.
I called a local tattoo shop, explained the situation and he was very nice and answered all my questions. He explained about swelling (which I already knew) and told me to take ibuprofen. I was like...IBUPROFEN...Why didn't I think about it?? It's an anti-inflammatory medication and will probably help A LOT. Now its 5 days old, still kinda ouchy and swollen, but its controlled with ibuprofen.
The biggest issue I've had with this piercing is the fact of people staring and the comments from the "old farts" at work. Technically, I'm not supposed to have facial piercings at work. Better yet, let me correct that...I can have them, but they must have some sort of retainer in them. One that is clear and not easily seen. That's a problem with a fresh piercing. However, I'm just taking it one day at a time and will change it out when its appropriate.
The looks from strangers on the street are priceless. People look me straight in the face and just stare at it like there's a boogie hanging from my nose or something. Its really crazy. I just have to laugh and go on. We are born into the generation of piercings and tattoos. Granted they are not for everyone, or they wouldn't be so popular. Why do something that "everyone" is doing?? Get a piercing or tattoo that makes you an "individual" or commerates a special time in your life. Just because your best friend has a Power T tattooed on her ass...doesn't mean you need to have one to.
Now...I'm plotting my next piercing. :-)
Anyway, if you're considering a Monroe/Madonna...they are very cute and very feminine. I would say "Go For It!" The beauty of piercings is that...if you don't like it, take it out and the hole grows up.
