I've been eyeing the Monroe for quite a while. Only spotting on a few people made it seem like a unique piercing. I browsed many BEM stories and pictures. I thought the monroe was absolutely gorgeous. My sister also wanted a lip piercing, but the only obstacle we had to pass was our mom. At the time I had twelve piercings already; Eyebrow, 4 navel, nose, three on each ear. So my mom was not crazy about the idea of a piece of titanium going through my upper lip. So I put the idea aside for a short while. A few days passed and I craved the monroe even more. Yet, at the same time, I was hesitant about it. I have a high tolerance for pain. The only problem was that I was frightened that the piercing wouldn't look good on me. There was only one way to find out. I asked my mom once more. That it could be an early birthday gift. To my surprise, she said yes!

We traveled to Platinum Ink on a Sunday. Sunday's are discount day. This was my first time at Platinum Ink. It was a small cozy shop that felt clean as a dentist office. I wasn't the only person getting pierced that day. My boyfriend, sister, a few other friends, and mom came with me to get their own piercings. I had to show my birth certificate to get pierced because I was underage. I filled out the papers first. This is when the jitters caught up to me. My hand slightly trembled as I signed my name at the bottom of the form. The piercing cost $21. When the rest of the bunch where done filling out their papers, we sat in the room for about five minutes. I was so excited that I couldn't keep still. I was the first one they called. The jitters still going through my body. My piercer lead me into a small room with what look like a dentist chair. He told me to take a seat and handed me a cupful of blue liquid. I was told to rinse my mouth out for 30 seconds. The mouthwash burned my tongue.

Now for the best part. I eyed the 14 gauge needle that sat on the tray next to me. I spit the mouthwash back in the cup and took a deep breath. My piercer is very good at what he does. He cleaned the outside of my lip with iodine. He didn't mark where the needle was supposed to travel through. Nor did he use clamps. He free-hands all his piercings. He took a good grip of my top lip and told me to be extremely still, which was hard for me to do. I closed my eyes. All I felt was a lot of pressure, no pain. I could feel the needle go though each layer of skin. There was no bleeding. As he tried to put the jewelry in, he accidently dropped in into my mouth, and had to fish it out. I had to let out a laugh. After the jewelry was in place, I took a look in the mirror. It was stunning. And perfectly placed. I was pleased with the way it looked on me. The post was really long so there was room for swelling. I walked out of the room to show off my monroe. By this time I started to feel light headed from all the excitement and had to sit down. My mom walked out of a room with her tongue pierced. She told me it was a "spur of the moment" thing. My sister got her lower lip pierced and finally, my boyfriend got his eyebrow pierced. On the way home, I was still very light headed from the adrenalin. But other than that, I was fine.

Its been a month since I got it. It's doing great! I can already change the post without a problem. There was some swelling the first week and some pain in the mornings (I took Advil to help with the pain). It was also a bit hard to eat, I couldn't move my mouth much at one time. I had to do use a lot of mouth washing. I've gotten so many complements on it as well as a few people that just stare at it. It clanks against my teeth every once in a while. Now, it's not a problem for me. For those for you who are thinking about getting the monroe, I suggest you do. Its given me a boost of confidence. I simply adore it. I have no regrets about it.

PS; Here's a link to a picture if you're want to know what it looks like! Enjoy! :D
