I've wanted a new piercing for absolutely ages now, and I was thinking about getting my rook and daith done (I will probably get them done in the holidays sometime), but they hurt a lot (apparently) and also i have to keep my piercings hidden because my mum hates them because she thinks they are REALLY common (how annoying!) and my school are ratty about piercings, and they make you take them out and give you detentions, so then the holes heal over and you are left with something you paid money for to have it all wrecked within a few days, AND a detention to attend! What a waste of money.

I immediately fell in love with it (well, after the initial "What a strange piercing" thoughts!). I read loads of other stories on it, looked at a few pictures and decided I really wanted it done.
I went into town to get it pierced but the place was shut. I was so annoyed cause it was the only time I could get it pierced for almost two weeks, and I had really worked myself up into getting one, I was real excited. When I got home I just decided I'd do it myself on spur of the moment.
I had read an experience previously about someone who did it themself and remembered what they had said about piercing far back to avoid rejection and using listerine. So that is what I did! Instead of using a match to sterilize my needle though, I decided it would be a lot cleaner and easier to use boiling water. (I used a match when I pierced my lip and it left a black mark)
So i boiled some water, put the needle I was going to use (just a normal needle used for sewing) and an earring (it was the only thing I had!) into an egg cup and poured boiling water on it to sterilize them both - so hopefully it wont get infected. I numbed it slightly with ice then rinsed my mouth out with listerine and put the ice back on again. I was getting a little nervous but as soon as I put the needle in it was fine. The needle wouldn't go through properly at first and I was getting scared but then I applied a bit more pressure and it went through REALLY easily. I think it had just got caught in the middle. BUT IT DIDN'T HURT ONE BIT!!! (and I had been scared that it would!).
I left the needle through the hole for about two minutes to make sure it wouldn't close up while i prepared my earring so it was ready to put in.
Then came the tricky(er) bit - actually putting the earring in. It took a bit of fiddling to find the hole I had pierced but once I had found it it went through just fine. It was so hard to get the rubber holder onto the end though, and it hurt a little because I was fiddling with it so much and moving it about. It was also really hard to put the end on as my fingers and rubber holder and earring were all slippy! (another good thing about going to a professional piercer is that you cut out all this hassle!)
Afterwards, I rinsed my mouth with warm saline solution and it stung a little but was totally fine after and still is. I'm going to rinse it twice a day with warm saline though, just to make sure it heals OK.
I so totally recommend this piercing to anyone who is scared about pain and who also wants a discreet one! It is really unusual and looks pretty good. And you wont leave in tears or feeling faint or anything. I love mine, and I'm so glad I was just spontaneous enough to do it. My mum still hasn't noticed or anything. Also, a lot of people think this piercing is really weird, but it's not! And you can also talk perfectly fine right after you have done it.
I'm so happy I just went ahead and did it! I would recommend anyone having it done to use a professional piercing studio though! Because you will get a proper ring to go through it and not just an earring, which will look A LOT better! And also you save a lot of fiddling. Although I saved money by doing it myself, I will just have to buy a proper ring for it! So I will be using money anyway.
I hope if you are thinking about getting your smiley pierced that you just go ahead and do it, because it is amazing. I can't wait to get more piercings now! And I am thinking about doing my frowny later on tonight!
