I went and got my monroe done on December 23, after wanting it done for almost 7 years. I first decided I wanted it when I was 12 years old, after seeing it on Rayna Foss-Rose, who at the time was the bassist of Coal Chamber, which was coincidentially, my favorite band at the time. Over the years, I asked my dad multiple times, and always got a no. After a few years I gave up and accepted that it would have to wait. When I finally turned 18, I still couldn't do it, since I was still living at home and couldn't have anything visible, since my dad would kick me out if I got anything pierced, so I got my septum done. I had it for about 3 months before my dad found it, and I got kicked out, just like I knew I would. He ended up letting me keep it, and move back in, since I was getting married in two weeks and would be moving out anyway.

Fast forward seven months. My husband is serving in Iraq in the US Air Force. Three months after I moved to California, my dad moved with his fiance to Oklahoma, to be closer to her family. So I came to Oklahoma for Christmas, and my dads fiance offered to take me with her when she got her tattoo, so I could finally get my monroe done. The night before, I had won $200 at the casino, so off we went. We headed to Just Another Hole in Broken Arrow (Tulsa suburb) and found out that we could both be fit in that day. I spent a few minutes talking to the girl at the front desk, and placement and what size I wanted. We both agreed that a smaller stud on the right would fit my face best. I completely agreed, since I think monroes have a tendency to look goofy when the ends are too large. I signed and filled out all the forms, and was introduced to my piercer, Justin. I paid and showed them my ID, and was led back into the piercing room. It was comforting to see that my piercer had snakebites, a medusa and his cheeks done, because I had seen badly placed lip piercings, but I knew he was capable. He had me rinse my mouth out with antiseptic rinse for 30 seconds, while he washed his hands and got everything ready. I had decided to be pierced at 16 gauge, because I didn't want the end of the stud to be too large. After I was done rinsing, he had me sit down in his chair.
We discussed placement and aftercare as he was wiping my lip with iodine, and then he marked my lip. I got up and looked in the mirror to check the placement, told him it looked right to me, and sat back down. He placed the clamps, asked me if I was ready, and then told me to take a long slow breath in and out, as he counted to three. He said he would pierce on three. I felt the needle slowly sliding through my lip, but it didn't hurt at all, although it was a somewhat strange sensation to feel each layer of tissue break. He removed the clamps and placed the jewelry, then we sat and talked for a few minutes to make sure I wasn't lightheaded or anything. I asked him about his cheek piercings, since I'm interested in getting mine done. He said they were just like the monroe, and he would highly recommend them.
After a few minutes, I got up, tipped him and walked back into the waiting room. My dads fiance was just finishing up her paperwork for her tattoo, so it was her turn. It's now 5 days later, and I haven't had any major problems. Its a little more swollen than I would have liked, but my lips are also very sensitive. I still have a little redness and dry skin around the hole, which I was told would be very normal with the healing process. He also said that my lips may get a little chapped over the next few days, but he said that was also normal. He also did a very good job in making sure that I was calm and ready for him to pierce me, rather than just rushing through it, like other artists have done. If you're thinking about getting this piercing done, I would definitely recommend it. It doesn't hurt, and the healing process is fairly easy. I would also recommend Just Another Hole in Broken Arrow, OK if you're ever in the Tulsa area and looking for a shop. Their shop is very clean, the employees are very helpful and understanding and I'm sure you'll just have an all around good experience with them.
