Okay, so like so many other people who have had piercings, I was starting to get the itch for a new one. I'd already had my ears done twice, my bellybutton & my left nostril so I wasn't worried too much about the pain factor; I was just having a hard time deciding what I wanted done! I've always wanted my tongue done but I'm way too scared & my mum will eat me if I do get it so I crossed that off the list straight away. After thinking about it for ages the idea of the madonna randomly popped into my head & I knew it was the one I wanted. I booked the day before I planned to get it done at a place called Cosmetics Plus & I was told it would cost $20. I got my nose done there & was really happy with it, plus I liked the girl who did it for me, Sally.

She hadn't booked so she made an appointment on the spot while I prepared myself up for what was about to happen. After waiting for a little while, the piercer who's name was Ash, came & got me & took me into the studio. She sat me down on a big white chair (kind of like a dentist chair) & asked me what I was getting pierced. I told her my madonna & she said that some people can't get their madonna done coz there are some pretty big veins in your lips & they can get in the way of where you'd like your piercing. At this point I was starting to freak out more than usual, because I'd never heard of these lip veins before & it was a little nerve-wracking, the thought that I might bleed to death! She assured me it would be fine & then cleaned my lip & dotted it with a pen. She showed me in the mirror & I asked if it could be moved to the side a little. She cleaned & dotted it again & this time it was perfect. Next she got the clamps out & put them over my lip with the dot in the middle. Then she lifted my lip up with the clamp & started checking for veins. She found a spot & after asking if I was okay again, shoved the needle through from the outside in & left it there while she got the jewelry ready. She used a tapered needle which means it's hollow on the inside so the jewelry can be threaded through; this is less painful & causes less scarring if you're to take out your piercing in the future. Then she threaded the jewelry through, took the needle out & attempted to screw on the ball. This was the worst bit.
The actual piercing wasn't so bad, but she was having a bit of difficulty getting the ball to screw on & it was twisting the bar around inside my freshly pierced raw lip. I wouldn't say it was unbearable pain but it did hurt quite a bit. The best way I can describe it is like a really thick dentist needle going through your lip, like the ones they use to numb your gums if you're getting a tooth pulled out.
Once she finally got the ball on i turned around & looked in the mirror & absolutely loved it! She told me that it had to be pierced on an angle coz of a vein that was in the way so I thanked her & walked out feeling fine, until about 30 seconds later.. I started getting dizzy & my hearing was fading & my vision was blurring (same thing happened when I got my bellybutton done, just the body's way of re-acting to pain), so I sat down & one of the other girls who worked there brought me a cup of water & some lollies & sat & talked to me til I felt better. Five minutes later I was up & out but the same thing kept happening over & over every time I stood up for the next half an hour, but after I got some food into me I was a-okay.
I've had it pierced for a month now & it's completely healed. During the first week it was a bit tender & a tiny tiny bit swollen but no one could even notice it except me but I kept it clean with sea salt rinse for the inside (after every meal) & a piercing cleaning spray for the outside, morning & night which only cost me $10 from the studio.
I haven't had any problems with infections but because it was pierced on an angle, the flat back of the bar on the inside of my lip digs into my lip a little bit & has made an indent & now the skin has grown over an edge of the flat back. When I first noticed this I went back to Cosmetics Plus & Sally checked it out & told me it was completely natural & that all lip piercings do it; because the body is adjusting to something foreign it adapts & allows the flat back to sink in to the lip a little & settle there. Before I went to see Sally I was REALLY worried about the indent because I'd read other people's stories where the skin had completely grown over, but mine hasn't grown anymore so I'm happy for now!
I would definitely recommend the madonna piercing to anyone who's considering a lip piercing, especially for girls. It's just so cute & feminine & suits basically anyone. It's easy to look after & you can't even feel it most of the time. It's easily my favorite piercing so far & I'm so glad I got it done.
