Yesterday started as a normal day. You know, wake up, do the whole morning routine. I was in the middle of the afore mentioned routine when my little sister ran into my bathroom, excitedly. "Guess what..guess what!!" she demanded rather than asked, "Mom says I can get my lip pierced!"

"That's swank, kid." I replied groggily. I thought back to when i was her age. I'd had my lip pierced twice. Now my lip looked bare and naked with no adornments whatsoever. Damn job, I thought, I need some sort of piercing...Hmm, I could gauge my ears a little..Nah, too visible. AH-HAH! I figured out what I should get.

I've been toying with idea of a scrumper for awhile. I saw some pictures while I was browsing this site and fell in love with the little piercing. I was debating whether to get a smiley or a frownie. A frownie would be easier to hide at the work place, but I want to get an inner lip tattoo and I like how the smiley looks more. So I made up my mind. Smiley-the perfect piercing for me!

We drove around Vancouver looking for an open shop at 4:00 on a sunday afternoon that would be willing to poke a hole in my 14 [one day before her 15th b-day] year old sisters face. Things were looking bad when I saw a little sign that read 'tattoo'. I pointed it out to Mom. We looked at the shops around the side, tanning salon, muffler shop, book store...no tattoo shop, man. Dad started pulling out of the parking lot.

"Wait!" I exclaimed, "It's probably on the side of the building."

So,we drove around it,and sure enough, there it was, tucked in the back corner. Blue Moon Tattoo.

The sign on the door read 'no children under 16 allowed'. Lucky for me, I'm 16. So Dad and I ran in and asked if it the artist if he could possibly pierce my sister's lip, seeing as both parents were present and whatnot. He had to think about it. But hey, I'm 16 and I can get my smiley now. So I asked him if he would do one.

"Sure". I told him I needed small jewelry becuase I work. He got a small ring out and told me to come on back. As I sat in the chair, I started wondering if this was going to hurt horribly. We talked about how I wanted to be a tattoo artist, he explained some things, asked some questions. Standard relax talk pre-piercing. He tilted my head back and told me to breathe slowly and deeply. I did as I was told. The third breath he pushed the needle through. I could feel a pinch but not anything horrifying. Not so bad, I thought. Then he put the ring in. Ok, a little more pressure but again, not too bad. Oh, the for that little bead. Oww! was the first thought that ran through my mind. "Damn it!" my piercer seemed frustrated, "This is a pretty tricky piercing to do." He grabbed the captive bead ring pliers and gave it another shot.

The bead was in place. "Check it out!" I was in love. Aside from the small amount of blood smeared on my front teeth, it looked groovy!

"Dig it!" I proclaimed. He explained standard care for it, you know, salt water gargle, keep your mouth clean. I said I'd be back in a few weeks to pick up a custom seamless ring for it. We made some more small talk just before I left.

On the way home I was buzzing about my rad new piercing endlessly. "Look at my new piercing!" " I love my little smiley!" "It's so boss!" Dad dug it, but mom thought it looked like a I had something stuck in my tooth. But you can't bring me down, I love it regardless.

When I got home, I just looked in the mirror and smiled. Which worked out becuase smiling sure makes it easy to admire a new smiley!

I'm a little worried about what my conservative boss will think, but I'm loving this piercing, man!

It didn't hurt very long after I got it done, only a slight pressure for, like, twenty minutes. We went to dinner and I only had problems with the potatoe skins, which, after I tore them up into more bite sized pieces, were no problem at all! So far there's been minimal swelling (my lip was a little swollen this morning, but went down after a few minutes).

To anyone who's thinking about this: I say if you want it, go for it, it's an interesting piercing that really doesn't hurt the much (of course it hurts a little, I mean shoving a needle through your body-you're going to feel something!) The only downside is I can't whistle or spit very well. But it's super swankydelick and very worth it! just rinse with sea salt water 3-4 times a day and mouthwash after eating or smoking [you shouldn't smoke, but if you have to, you might as well rinse it out afterwards]. No putting dirty things in your mouth [if you catch what I'm throwing-no oral, man] and enjoy your jive piercing!
