For years in had debated on getting my lip pierced or not, mainly because nobody in my family had any piercings other than ears and my parents didn't particularly like the piercing itself. One weekend I drove to Grand Rapids and was visiting my friends like I usually do and suddenly had the urge to pierce my lip. All of my friends have piercings and it just so happened that my friend's girlfriend had experience in piercing both the lip and other places so I figured I would ask her if she would do it.

I asked her and of course she said yes, and so she got out her needles and piercing posts and what-not. First she asked me which side I wanted it on and I wasn't really sure. I decided to take an open hoop and try it on both sides and also in the middle. Ultimately I decided on the right side. So she got a little marker and had me mark it where I wanted to put the hole. I marked the spot and this is where I started to get a little nervous. I have both of my ears gauged to a 0g and had pierced my lip once before, but of course took it out before it could heal because of the reasons I said at the beginning.

Anyway, She got out her needle and placed it on the mark, she asked me if I was ready and I said yes, so all at once she pushed the needle into my lip (while holding the back of it) and eventually got all the way through. I don't really mind pain so it wasn't anything terrible for me to endure. After the needle was through she took a straight post and followed the needle out and put the little ball on the post. So there it was, I had my lip pierced and it really didn't even hurt. I decided after about 30 minutes of the post that I wanted to replace it with a loop. Well it turns out the needle we pierced with was only a 16g and not a 14g like most standard lips. So luckily she had a 16g loop and within a matter of seconds she had the loop in my lip and I was good to go.

After the first week or so my lip hurt like hell and got all crusty and my lip was all swollen. However all of that went down and disappeared and it felt fine. So after about 3 weeks of the 16g loop, I decided to "gauge" it to a standard 14g loop. I was a little nervous because I had never taken the loop I had currently out and was afraid the hole might close up. I decided to risk it and try. So I pulled the loop out and with more ease than I expected, pushed the 14g through the hole in my lip. I still have the 14g although I've got a bad tendency to play with it and bite it which bent it a lot. That is the story of getting my lip pierced. It wasn't too painful and I saved myself $40.00.

At first my family was extremely against getting my lip pierced however they eventually got used to it and so did I. When I first got it done I found that it was a little more difficult to drink because I felt like it was going to fall off, but it couldn't have because it was through my lip. Like I mentioned earlier, the pain was about comparable to a toothache or maybe a sore inside your mouth. I was constantly cleaning it with Water, which was doing fine but a friend told me that if you clean it with Sea Salt that the "wound" will heal a lot faster so I went out and got some sea salt and to be honest I really did not notice a difference in the healing time, It just tasted like crap and made my lip sting. All my friends really liked it and my family got used to it, I've heard everything from "Lip piercings are sexy" to "You look like a f*g".

Regardless I am extremely glad that I had it done because its something I've always wanted to do and never really had the nerve to do until now. It will defiantly be a nice addition to my 0g ears and once I get some tattoos they will look nice together.

I would recommend that anyone who wants to get their lip pierced do it because its an interesting feeling, having a piece of surgical steel passing through your lip and coming out your mouth. If you don't mind pain, go for it. However I would advise not to get nervous when you get it because if you tense up, I hear that it hurts a lot more.
