My love for this piercing started with my admiration for the Asian porn star, Lily Thai. I saw one of the piercings she had, and I was in love. I thought it was the coolest thing ever, even though I didn't know quite where the piercing hole was. She had some kind of gum piercing, and with a little research, I found out that the piercing was called a scrumper, more well known as a smiley. I also learned that the actual piercing was through the webbing on the inside of the upper lip.
At A Glance Author Emily When A year ago Artist Me Studio My room Location WA After doing more research and thinking about the piercing, I came to the conclusion that I wanted one too. It was a relatively small piercing, and it was discreet. I liked it because it was unique, I figured that I wouldn't meet anyone with a piecing quite like mine. I decided to do it.
First I made a trip to Wal-Mart, I went to their piercing section and bought an eyebrow ring, and a closed barbell. I figured that I would decided what one I wanted to wear later. I went home and prepared to pierce myself. I gathered supplies from my bathroom: alcohol, mouthwash, tissue; then I washed my hands. I went back into my room. I sterilized everything I was using, then I swished with mouthwash. Next I sat at my vanity table and held up my upper lip, I grabbed the needle I was going to use in my other hand. After deciding exactly where I wanted my piercing, I placed the needle on the area, took a breath in, and pushed it through. I looked into the mirror and hardly believed it, it was in. I thought it would hurt more than that, but I barely even felt it. I sat there for a minute and then decided to put jewelry in it. I chose the eyebrow ring for now, so I could give it time to heal. I pulled the needle out and tried to put the jewelry in. No go. The hole was too small, even though my jewelry was pretty small too (16 or 18 gauge, if I remember correctly), it wouldn't fit. I put the needle back in and left it there for a few minutes while I thought. I decided to try again. I took the needle back out, and this time, instead of holding my lip up while trying to put the barbell in, I didn't touch my lip, and the barbell just glided right through. Now is the hard part. I have a teeny tiny ball to put on the other side of my barbell. Putting the ball on was made quite a bit more difficult by my saliva. It was hard to hold the barbell, but eventually I got it on. I held up my lip and examined my handiwork. It looked just like the pictures.
I left it alone for about a week. Every day, I would rinse my mouth with mouthwash to kill any bacteria there was, and to keep it clean. I didn't tell anyone about it, I wanted it to be a surprise. When I finally felt the need to show it off, I put the closed barbell in. once again, I had issues getting the ball in. When I got the ring in and smiled, a pretty little metal ball was revealed in between the top of my two front teeth. I was happy, it looked really close to what Lily Thai had.
When I went to school with my new piercing, the attention was endless. Some people thought it was disgusting, others were amazed, others were just in shock that someone could get that pierced. There was a lot of confusion as to where the piercing was. Some people, who obviously don't know anything about personal space, would just come up to me, say "Can I see?" and lift up my upper lip. I was somewhat amused by this. Other people would ask me to lift up my upper lip. There were some people who were impressed with the piercing and wanted to get one themselves.
My boyfriend liked it, and knew where I had got the idea the moment he saw me. He couldn't resist sticking his tongue in my upper lip. I found that pretty funny. I remember someone asking him if he thought it was ugly. My boyfriend said that he thought it was sexy, that made me happy, and I think that that alone made the piercing worth it. People asked him a lot of odd questions, like if it was sexually pleasing, if it got in the way, if he felt it when he kissed me, the list goes on and on.
Overall, this was a good piercing experience for me. The piecing was almost painless and very attractive looking, in my opinion. There was no blood, no complications, it was pretty easy piercing. It didn't leave me sore, or anything. It also healed quickly. I think it hurts less than getting your ears pierced. Good piercing for a beginner.
