I never thought I would get a lip ring until I was actually at another body modification site where and I saw various pictures and comments on lip rings. From there, the idea of a lip ring was planted in my mind. That was during the Christmas break of 2005. After I returned to campus I decided to get my industrial first and then maybe get a lip ring at the end of the semester. But due to the prospect of not kissing anyone for a while, I figured it was a good a time as any to get it done. So a few days later, as soon as the piercing parlor was open and my piercer was there, Coron (Who I would recommend to anyone in Oberlin, OH thinking about getting a piercing). Previously, Coron had also pierced my nipple and conch. The tattoo/piercing parlor in Oberlin is very small and on the second floor of an old building built in the 1900's. Below it is a Quiznos's Sub joint. But even though it's small, the piercing room on the second floor is very clean and nice, quaint even because when I sit in the "dentist" chair I can see some of the town out of the window, which relaxes me. After I told Coron what I wanted and filled out the paperwork she sat me down put on some gloves and got her equipment out. From there she marked the spot where she thought I would like it (I wanted it on my left side) and after the second try I was satisfied with her positioning. Then she applied a little numbing gel on the 14 Gauge needle and I stuck out my lip, almost as if I was pouting. After a deep breath in and out the needle pierced my flesh and I could feel the cool gel move through my lip and inside my mouth. I was surprised. I had really just felt a small prick and a slight pain but it was over before it really even began and I felt the cooling/numbing gel more than I felt of a cool sensation. And I really didn't even feel when Coron placed my jewelry in my newfound hole. It was more of a tugging sensation and when I looked in the mirror for the first time, albeit hesitantly, I was shocked. I had new metal poking out of my mouth. I wasn't absolutely "wowed" by it at first, but I did like it.

And as time went on(as I've noticed with most of my piercing) I came to love it. I went alone to the piercing parlor so when I returned to the dorms I was somewhat hesitant on what people might say. Even though the school is ULTRA-liberal and multiple piercing or some other "weird" form expression doesn't garner a second look, I still had my reservations. To my utter surprise I got many a compliments from people. And not just "I noticed your new piercing...cool" No. There was literally at least 5-6 people who saw me and said something along the lines of, "I REALLY like your new piercing. It fits you very well. I love the new look" All these comments ranged from people who I may have one class with to friends and in between. I thanked them of course and was happy because I loved it and others loved it as well (though what would have been most important is that I loved it). Healing aftercare went very well and I usually washed out my mouth after every meal for the first couple of days. Afterward I stopped washing my mouth out with mouth wash after every meal or snack though I did rinse my mouth with sea salt, use mouth wash, and clean my lip ring in the morning or evenings but usually both. Granted, my newfound piercing didn't get infected, thank the Lord. And while my aftercare of my piercing wasn't bad, I could have done better in maybe aspects.

But in May, after having changing my lip ring out for a labret stud, It fell out and after a while attempting to get it back in, I couldn't. I had to go to a different piercing parlor as I wasn't in Ohio at the time, and after just that small amount of time it had closed up. AHH! So I had to pay 10 dollars to get the jewelry placed back in. But this time, this peircer didn't use any cooling gel so it was a surprise when I discovered that repiercing my lip hurt more than the initial piercing! But now it's back in and doing well. I was thinking of maybe stretching it in order to not have it close up as quickly. So far aside, from my folks(and their reaction wasn't even that bad) I have had no real reaction to my lip ring save for the time I was at the hospital and one of the receptionist told me I probably got sick because of all my holes. It's one thing to say you don't like my piercings...fine. I do me, you do you. But to say I got sick because of my piercings, because of my expression (which was not true because I was sick for a TOTALLY unrelated reason and it happened long after I got my lip pierced) is plain BS! Happy piercing!
