I love piercings. I really do. While I was in high school, I had my tragus, industrial and anti-tragus done. But there was always one piercing I've really, really wanted. My monroe. My best friend Sarah has one, and she always told me that she thought it would look good on me. I didn't do it for a long time, however, because she had hers, but after she took hers out, I decided that there was no reason not to go ahead and get the monroe, which I thought looked absolutely phenomenial on most everybody I had seen with it. There was one problem with this fantasy, though. It's hard to convince your beer drinking, NASCAR watching, snowmobiling family that a piercing on your face will look good.

Also, I have learned the most important lesson to learn when your in college... do what makes you feel good, and what you feel like doing.
One day after class, I decided to go visit my best friend Alicia, in the town where her boyfriend lives, about 70 miles away from my hometown of Gardiner. Alicia had wanted to get her snug done for some time, so we decided to be rebels and just do it.
We went to Maine Tattoo and Piercing in Brewer, Maine and filled out all the necessary paperwork. After he had taken photocopies of our licenses, he started getting ready.
The piercer, David, decided that I would be going first, which was fine for me, because I didn't want to chicken out when I saw the pain Alicia would be in.
I went into the room and sat in the chair. Everything was in it's sterile package and David gave me mouthwash to swish around in my mouth.
After the 30 seconds of horribly minty burning in my mouth, David marked the spot where he thought the monroe would look good. After I looked at it, I decided that the spot was a little too high, partly because I have a huge nose, but also because I really wanted to highlight my big lips, which I am horribly proud of. I am also a music major, majoring in jazz with emphasis in voice, so as a singer, I decided that I couldn't unfortunately have this too close to my mouth, because I didn't want to risk having my vowels sound any different.
After he changed the marking to where I thought it would look hot, he put the clamp on my lip. Usually the clamp is the most painful part of a piercing, but suprisingly this clamp didn't hurt at all, which was weird because it's inside your mouth. Then took the needle out of the package, told me to take a couple deep breaths in and out and pierced my lip from the inside out.
I was really expecting some horrible pain, but suprisingly, I felt no pain at all... Not even a drop of pain. I was so excited after that, I almost jumped out of the chair!
David quickly put the jewelry in my mouth and tada! The piercing was all set.
After looking in the mirror I decided that I didn't need a nose job, or a boob lift or liposuction... All I needed was this beautiful new piercing to make me feel new.
Trying to convey that story to my family was indeed another story, but that's for a different time, and probably a different place.
A week later, and my piercing is on it's way to healing beautifully.
It get's irritated sometimes ( I'm a music major, and a singer, so it's always getting caught on my gums), but all in all, there's no pain involved whatsoever. It is, however, still red, which I suppose is normal, but I also find very irritating, just because when I put on makeup to go out, I have to be careful not to make the area around the piercing any redder.
I would encourage anybody to get this piercing, it's absolutely gorgeous, painless and the confidence you can get from having this foreign object in your face that looks sexy is the best feeling of all.
I have gotten numerous compliments from random people on the street, friends, even teachers who have never seen this piercing ( you have to remember I live in Maine, which we lovingly refer to as " hickville"). Lots of people have never seen the "monroe", but I think most people agree, it's an absolutely fantastic way to claim your independence.
Please just make sure you find a reputable person to do this piercing, because I have heard of this piercing going horribly wrong.
Happy piercing!!!
