Alright, so one day I was doing my usual, surfing BME, reading up on peoples experiences with piercings I fancied. I went to the one I usually go to, lip. I always thought it looked fantastic on people and I just wanted one of my own.

I talked to my mother about getting one and she disapproved of the idea immediately. She disliked any facial piercing out there, the only thing she let me do was pierce my ears. Strange thing is, she would let me stretch my ears beyond a 00g but not let me have a miniscule hole in my lip. Disappointed, I forgot about it until this month (November) which I had decided I was going to get it no matter what. Since I was not of age to get it professionally done at a parlor without having to have a parent sign the form for you , I was stuck with BMEshop's piercing supplies.

I waited a week and a half for my stuff to come in and finally the time had come to do it. It was in the peak of the night hours when I propped myself on my bathroom counter and checked out where all the veins in my lip were. Since I was extremely nervous to hit one, I decided I would just mark ALL my veins near the area where I was going to pierce, no harm in being extra careful. I then marked the area where the entry hole would be and then where it would come out on the inside. Finally, I was all ready.

I washed my hands thoroughly and then put on some new surgical gloves, wiped the area down with an alcohol wipe and took the needle out of its packaging. I chose a 12g needle and CBR because I felt that it would be an appropriate size for a lip piercing, too small would make it reject, and too big..well.. too big would just hurt. Taking a deep breath in and out, a clamped my lip with the forceps and slowly pushed the needle through. I could feel it breaking through every layer of my skin. I would go through, stop and take a breather, then take another deep breath and go at it again. Every time I stopped the process I noticed my hand holding the needle would start to shake. And every so often my lip would begin to quiver as though it was going in shock from a foreign object being put through it. I repeated this process for about 30 minutes. When it finally broke through the last layer of skin I was extremely relieved that it was almost over. Sadly that was the easiest part.

I observed at how my lip was done and how neat it looked with just the needle sticking out of it. I then took the CBR out of its packaging and slowly pulled out the needle with the ring attempting to follow it. No luck. I had lost the hole. I tried getting it through the piercing again and again and by now my lip was swelling from the piercing. 45 minutes after all this struggling, I finally got the ring through and it looked awesome. I grabbed my pair of ring openers and put the ball in. Even better. And surprisingly, I had never bled once throughout the whole ordeal. That night I rinsed my mouth out with oral-b alcohol free mouthwash and did a sea salt soak.

2 days later I notice a bit of bruising on the inside of my lip so I go to the local parlor to see if it was alright and whether or not I should continue to let it stay in my lip. They told me it was fine and that it was normal for it to bruise during the first few days as long as it doesn't continue for a week, so he told me to come back in about 5 days to let him check it out. He also gave me a small sample amount of a mouthwash specified for oral piercings & told me to take in lots of vitamin C to help speed up the healing process.

So far, my piercing has been healing quite nicely, its been in for about 5 days now, all the swelling is almost gone. The bruising is pretty much gone too, all you can see is a very very faint line of blue right beside the piercing.

I don't recommend self piercing to anyone, I had read up on it more then enough to know what I was doing. I also had bought all the proper materials to do a good job of it (forceps, hollow needles, alcohol wipes). It was quite the experience for me and I am more than willing to do it again.
