When I was younger, people I knew used to always say that my dimples were so cute and that I should be happy that I have them. I always disagreed. It didn't matter much to me. But then I started to become interested in some piercings, and I thought maybe I should do something about these dimples.

Besides my ears, my first piercing was my lip, and then my nostril. I was convinced I needed more on my face, so I started to learn about some more piercings, preferably on the face, and some that aren't too popular here. I saw that on this site, there were some photos of people with their cheeks pierced. I thought that it was pretty different. So of course, I decided to learn more about them.

Finally, on Saturday, January 15, my friend and I went to Ottawa. Actually, I wasn't completely sure I wanted my dimple pierced. I was also considering a lowbret. So, I asked the girl there, Sara (who is extremely helpful) which sounded better. I was told that lowbrets aren't the most comfortable piercings to get. So, I decided to get just one dimple pierced, my left one. I was warned about how much it would swell, so that's why I thought I would just get one done for now. Which turned out to be a good idea.

I got it pierced, and I was surprised that it didn't hurt that much, just a pinch like my lip. I was told to take 2 Advil every 4-6 hours to make sure the swelling doesn't get too bad. When I got home that night, everything was fine. The next day was the same. By Monday, it was obvious it was starting to swell. Tuesday afternoon, the ball on the outside was half way inside my cheek. By that night, it was mostly inside my cheek. I knew that Sara was gone on vacation, and would only return that Friday. Fortunately, I was given an e-mail address in case something happened. I wrote her an e-mail telling her about how the ball was literally inside my cheek.

On Wednesday morning, I woke up to see that the ball had gone completely into my cheek, and skin was covering it. I was really worried about all of this, but then I was very happy to see that Sara had e-mailed me during the night. I followed her instructions and went to get help.

I got my mom to bring me to Rideau St. Tattoos like Sara had suggested. The guy who was there replacing Sara was someone who didn't know very much about ...well, anything. It was not only very painful to have a ball inside my cheek, but it was very uncomfortable being there, with a guy who was really confused and who was pretty rude. I told him what Sara had written to me; To put in a 3/4" tongue barbell.

The whole process was extremely painful and scary. While I tried to push the ball out of my cheek with my tongue on the inside, he tried to unscrew the ball, which didn't work at all. So, he decided to take pliers to my face. Yes, pliers. He pulled on the ball quite hard, so he could get a hold of the bar, and attempted to unscrew the ball. He finally got it, and took out the very tiny labret jewelry which it was pierced with. It felt good to have it out, but then I knew the guy would have to put the tongue barbell in fast, before it closed. He finally put it in, and cleaned up the mess. He seemed very shocked about what had just happened and said he had never seen anything like that happen before.

That Saturday, my friend and I went back for a check-up. Sara said that everything seemed fine and to come back in 3 weeks so I could wear the original jewelry, finally.

Turns out, when I went back February 5 to get it put in, I was still swollen, because I recently had a bad cold, and also, it was so swollen to begin with, it would take much more time. So now I get to wait another 3 weeks.

Everyone has commented on how they've never seen someone with their dimples pierced before. I always get the same question, "Did it hurt!?!?" So, I tell them my lovely story about having a little ball sink into my cheek. Since I will be stuck with this long barbell for a while, I thought maybe something needed to be different. My friend bought me a cute little blue spike which I have been wearing lately. Which is nice, but I look kind of weird with a barbell sticking 1 cm out of my face.

This was honestly not the best experience. I am unsure if I want to get my other dimple pierced now. But if I do, it definitely won't be pierced with something so short!
