Let me just say that I had gone back and forth as to whether I thought this piercing was going to hurt; I figured since the web of skin was so skinny that it couldn't really hurt that much. I also had my tragus pierced about 6 months prior and it didn't pain me all that much, so that only led me to believe that a scrumper wouldn't hurt. I looked through this wonderful ezine and saw some pictures of happy people with scrumpers, and then finally there was a picture of someone being pierced. I wish I hadn't seen it. This picture had blood dripping everywhere, which scared me just a bit. Despite seeing this I decided to go through with it- pain is part of the pleasure of being pierced, right?

I talked to some close friends- asked them how they thought I'd look with a scrumper. Unfortunately I did not get a very good response. I got a lot of "uhh.. I don't think it'll look good" 's. But this did not deter me, I was determined to get this piercing. I figured if it really did look that bad and I really did not like it, I could just take it out. I liked this piercing so much for two reasons: not a lot of people have it, and because I could hide it if I wanted. (I planned on getting a small hoop that would only be seen when I smiled wide.) I really liked the idea that this piercing would be a 'secret'.

My friend and I both wanted to get pierced for quite some time. She wanted to get her septum done and we decided we would go together. One day she just randomly called and said "let's go get pierced" . So after months of being jealous of people with scrumpers and biting my lip in anticipation, we finally drove into Philly with a couple other friends. We opted for Philly because of the NJ law that friends aren't allowed to accompany you to be pierced- only piercer and piercee are allowed in the room.

Before all of this I had called around and found that it was somewhat difficult to find a place that would do a scrumper, in fact only 1 of the 3 places I called said they would do it. This kind of added to the mystique, if you will. The only nice people that would do it were at Warrior. So I was off to Warrior piercing on South St. which I hadn't really heard much about.

I walked upstairs to the shop, I paid for my jewelry and piercing, then had to sit for an agonizing 15 minutes. I had the jitters and I was full of questions like "how do you think it'll look?" "do you think it'll hurt?!" I picked out a barbell because I wanted the piercing to be discreet and sat down in the dentist-like chair. The piercer was great, he calmed my nerves a lot. The piercing itself was pretty quick, and it did hurt when there was a little tugging on the jewelry.(it actually brought tears to my eyes!)It felt as though I had stuck gum in between my teeth and lip like I did when I was younger. (In a few days that sensation went away). In no time my piercing was done and I was on my way with gallons of listerine in tow. I swear I was Listerine's best customer for a month. My mom was somewhat concerned over the large amounts I was using.

I proudly showed off my mouth's latest addition to all of my once-doubting friends. Each one took back what they said and followed it with something like "that's hardcore". After about a month, and the proper check up at the shop, I decided to get a small hoop put in. When my barbell was out, I had the same sensation I had when I was first pierced. My mouth felt funny without the scrumper.

I just learned that I most likely will need to be repierced because I was pierced kind of low and it may grow out soon. I probably will in a few weeks. I am kind of concerned about receding gums, and worn down enamel- these were some reasons why the places around me wouldn't pierce me (or at least this is what the piercer who did my friend's septum said to me). The same piercer went on to lecture me and said "I would do a scumper, but they're dumb, all oral piercings are dumb, they have no point." I couldn't seem to find a function for his pierced nose or gauged ears, I didn't point this out to him, but apparently he just really doesn't like oral piercings. Well I like mine.
