I've wanted my lip pierced for a few years now, but I could never get it done as I wasn't old enough and I wouldn't be allowed this piercing in school. I've managed to get away with, belly button, tragus, 6 lobe piercings and the rim of my ear done in school, so I didn't want to risk getting many more.

But alas, last week I turned 16 and decided I needed another hole in my body!

I went into Blue banana, where I've had all but three piercing's done, (I had my first lobes pierced in a hairdressers with a gun, and the thirds ones, by a friend...don't do it) and asked a bit about lip piercing's. This was the day before my birthday, so I obviously couldn't get it done there and then. One of the women asked me my age and I said I was 16 the next day, now came the heartbreaker.

"Have you got ID"?

"I have my 16 + card"

"I'm sorry we don't accept that"

Nooooo! I was only visiting this time, so I hadn't brought my passport or anything with me, I was gutted. They said I could bring a parent, so now I had to get my mum to agree to sign the papers for me, she's so sweet, she said yes, he he.

The next day came and we went into town. They remembered me, so they just got my mum to sign etc. I was having it done on the left side of my lip. I really wanted the side to be pierced with a ring, but the lady advised against it, so I chose a metallic blue bar.

The reason they told me not to use a ring, was because the ring is quite big and it would move around a lot, and is more prone to growing out. Although I have now been told by other piercer that this is not true! Ahh! It's confusing! So many piercers say different things about how they heal, and how to treat them, so my advice is to follow what you are told, as long as they are a well-known place and have a good reputation.

I had to wait for 10 minutes while the equipment was sterilized, I wasn't as nervous as I was for my tragus piercing. My friend said I just went bright red so I obviously looked really nervous.

Eventually it was my turn, and I was called in the room, I took my friend Sarah in with me, I was going to take my mum in, but she's already seen me have loads of piercing's, so I thought I'd let someone else watch me in pain (so I thought!)

I showed Emma where I wanted to be pierced and she marked it, I kept my eyes closed so I didn't see my friend make any funny faces while I had it done, otherwise I might have moved. She then placed the clamp in the correct position and WHAM. I really thought a lip piercing was meant to be more...painful. I felt the needle on the front of my lip; it felt nothing more than a pinprick. It bled a little but stopped quite soon after. I think it didn't hurt so much, as I had it lower down that usual, but it still looks really nice and should still look good with a ring.

She told me to clean around the bar with salt water twice a day, and use Listerine, to clean the inside of my mouth. Salt water is also another option for the inside of your mouth. Another piercer has also said that washing your mouth with Listerine is a bad idea as it thins your blood, and makes it more likely to bruise. But I still have cleaned it like this and it is ok so far.

My lip piercing is quite low down, it's like a labret, but to the left alot! It's quite different and not that many people have actually noticed it! My best friend didnt notice it for about an hour! I love it, but I hope I can still get a job OK!

It's now been a week, and my lip is red, but it doesn't hurt, and it is quite crusty, so I'm increasing the amount of times I clean it. Make sure you keep it clean and try to be careful when you wash your face! I'll always remember getting my lip pierced, as while I was having it done, I was missing my train journey home, and nearly missed my birthday party!

If you're thinking of having this done, go for it, but don't forget to think about keeping it clean, it's on show alot, and it isn't something you can hide real easy.
