I have wanted to get my lip pierced for years but never went through with it for some reason or another. I had no problem getting my tongue, nostril, eyebrow, industrial, tragus, etc, etc. done but always hesitated on my lip. But I decided last week that although it would not be accepted at my job or internship that I was going to do it today.

I have been into piercings since age 16 and tattoos since I turned 18 and have averaged one or two a year since then. Then last October happened, on a trip down south I developed a blood clot in my leg that I thought had put an end to it all. I was placed on a blood thinner called coumadin and told that I was not allowed to get anything else done because I could bleed to death. For those of you that have the addiction you know what that must have felt like. First I was told 3 months which I could deal with then it turned into 9 months and now maybe forever. The important part is that I had to stay off the medicine for a few weeks for some other medical reasons and I realized that this was my big window of opportunity. So two days before I might have to go back on the thinner forever I went and got my piercing. I headed down to Big Joe and Sons where I have gotten my last few piercings and tattoos and where I send anyone that asks if I know a good place. The people there are really friendly and the quality of their work is really great.

For some reason I was more nervous about this one than any other piercing or tattoo I have ever gotten. I woke up feeling sick to my stomach and stayed that way until I sat down in the piercer's office. I only had to wait a few minutes and it was my turn. The piercer was really cool, but I can't remember his name. He asked me what I wanted and I told him a labret stud on the right side corner of my lip/mouth. Together we marked the spot and next came the clamping. Just like with the tongue and other piercings the clamp is uncomfortable but does not really hurt. I asked if it was a painful one compared to some of the others I had and he said maybe a little more sensitive but nothing worse, I was relieved, although I would have gotten it done either way. He told me he was about to start and slowly pushed the needle through. It only took about a minute or less for the needle to go through although it felt a little longer. It hurt a tiny bit but nothing that I could not handle or would not do again. Unlike cartilage where you feel a popping sensation this felt a little more like tearing. After the needle was through he put in the cute little silver and blue gem stud and cleaned up my drool (oops). I will admit that I am not a huge fan of blood and when I felt a watery substance running down my chin I got a little nervous thinking it was blood. Luckily a minute later he mentioned that it was saliva and I was very relieved. I did not know what to think at first, my lip was a little swollen and the ball looked a little bigger than I had wanted it to be but like 15 minutes later I was in love with it.

My biggest worry is how I am going to work around it with my job and stuff. I figure for now either a little band-aid will do and in the future after it heals I plan on getting a retainer for it so I do not get in trouble. I probably should have gotten this done years ago when I didn't have a job to worry about but the timing then was not right so I will deal with it somehow now. I think most people will get a kick out of it but you never know.

It definitely was worth all the worrying that I did. I love it. My boyfriend was really supportive but my family and friends think I am nuts and are not thrilled about it, oh well, my lip. Not theirs! It has been less than 12 hours since I had it done but so far it feels pretty good. It feels a little tight and sore at times but again nothing major. I suggest it to anyone who is thinking about it. I still feel feminine and attractive now with a little added sparkle on my face. So if you are thinking about it, go for it. Hey, if you don't like it when it's done take it out, it's one of the beautiful ideas of piercings!!
