Well, I suppose that my fascinations with body modifications blossomed at a very early age. My dad sports tattoos on all parts of his body from his upper back to his lower leg and my mother has multiple tattoos as well as piercings on her ears and on her tongue. I can still remember begging my mom for a tattoo of butterfly wings on my ankle for my tenth birth day, although I never received that I did get a new pair of ear piercings. I'm pretty sure that my parents never encouraged my interest in body mods but hey, growing up around modified creatures makes it hard to not form an interest and inner bond to them.

My first body modifications were much like all the other kids my age, standard ear lobe piercings. After a while they became a part of me and I felt kind of lame, like I was becoming everyone else. For most, being like others is a whole, full feeling. For me, it was an empty feeling. I was missing the unique part of me that I always long for. So, it was time for more! Between the ages of ten and twelve I had both my ears pierced three times which was great! I loved the piercings but my parents got annoyed when I removed some of them at least three times just to have them re-pierced. (what can i say... the pain is addicting)

In the summer of 2002, a few months before my fourteenth birthday, my family and I took a trip to New York where my father had grown up. I just so happened to hear through the grape vine that it was legal for underage creatures to receive body piercings with parental signature. I had been wanting an eye brow piercing for a while so I expected my parents to at least say maybe... but I got a simple "no".

A few days of begging however got me to where I needed to be: the parents were annoyed and with a little push and shove I was on my way to the nearest parlor to get my piercing. All I can say is HELL YES! I have heard from numerous people that the first is always the best and I agree 100%. A shock shot through and then that warmth shot through my body and it was the most stellar thing I've ever felt. I was so stoked I yelled "Hoooly shit!" and the piercer just smiled and I felt this release of energy. It was great. I can't say the same about my next piercing which came in November of 2003. It was a nostril piercing and the crunch noise and little crusties made it a memorable yet horrifying experience. Though fully healed, I still cringe at the thought of the little crusties.YUCK. Thank goddess I haven't gotten crusties in any of my other wholes. Errmm, yea.

But my newbie piercing, and bestest yet, is my lovely labret. I have adored the "lip" piercing for quite sometime, seeing it on the drummer of my favorite band, on the lip of my crush, it seemed like a neato thing to have. So, I asked my parents and that chilly day in April, they drove me down to Go Ask Alice in Brockport, NY to get it done.

Walking in I was a little shakey. Partly because I was so excited I could hardly retain myself, and party because I was thinking about that ever so loud crunch of my last piercing. I knew I wanted this piercing and I was a man... well, girl on a mission and I would not let myself back out.

As we were reading through the agreement I felt my legs stiffen. I was getting nervous which usually happens when I get piercings but this time it was really bad. I just went with it though, I don't think anyone noticed that I could hardly move without stumbling being that it was only a short distance from the couch to the piercing chair.

He sat me down, cleaned me up, marked the spot where the jewelry would be placed, and explained to me the procedure.

He asked me if I was ready and all I could think of was crunch crunch crunch SHOCK!!! But, I told him I was more ready than I'd ever be and then... done.

All I felt was a little pressure and that great warmth that flows through your entire body. It was great, the easiest, most painless, pretty-ful piercing I own.

This piercing healed faster than any piercing I've had. It's had a few saliva leakings but hey, what else can you expect when you have a 14 gauge hole in your lip?? The only discomfort it has caused was sore gums now and then from accidentally bumping it and sleeping on it. It's been a great piercing and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone!

Also always remember that your body is a permanent canvas, not a magic-erase board. Choose your mods carefully and always appreciate them. Your body is yours and your body is beautiful.

Much peace and love,

Adrienne
