I don't look like I'm the type to get pierced, as some would say I'm a "goodie goodie." I had always been interested in piercings, as my brother had an abundant amount. I always imagined the pain to be excrutiating and I never really liked the idea of medal being shoved through my skin.

About a year and a half ago I came across a woman with a monroe. I couldn't keep my eyes off of it. I thought it was one of the greatest piercings I had ever seen and one of the classiest. At that point, I still couldn't see myself getting one, but I was still intrigued.

Recently, I moved to New Mexico, where I realized I could become a whole new person and do some of the things I wanted. I think then, was the time I decided I wanted the piercing. Time had passed and I hadn't spoken to anyone about it. I decided I wanted new hair, new glasses, and then I would get the piercing. You could say I'm more of the trendy type, with short contemporary red hair and pink cat eye glasses, and I figured the piercing would only add to the appearance I liked so much already.

This past Sunday I went in to get the piercing, as it was my mother's only day off, but the studio was booked and I hadn't thought about a birth certificate. While we were there, we decided to get as much information as possible. We spoke about the initial piercing with Andy and the jewelry he would be using. We talked about the pain, whether or not there would be numbing, and the cost.

We planned on getting the piercing yesterday(Tuesday), but I was still wary. I was afraid about the overall pain and the 15 g needle going through my lip. I logged onto BME as i did every two or three days and read about others experiences and information I might want to know of.

The day of the piercing I went around telling everyone I knew about my upcoming experience and to wish me luck. I got home from school only to find my mother asleep and her in a very bad mood. I woke her up and we were on our way.

I arrived at Star Tattoo and walked in and told the man at the front desk I had an appointment with Andrew. Andy came in and gave me the consent forms where I sat filling them out. After I had finished, I put the clipboard back on the front desk, sat, and waited. About five minutes later, Andy came in and told me it was that time.

I followed him slowly with my mother and he motioned me to sit in what looked like a dentist's chair, besides the fact that it was latex and red? I sat down and he explained the procedure to me. He then handed me a small cup of what looked like listerine and told me to rinse. Much to my surprise it burned about ten times more. I spit it back into the cup, Andy threw away the cup, then changed his gloves.

He swabbed out what looked like vaseline and smeared it over my upper lip; it was disinfectant. He then marked the spot of my piercing and asked if I was happy with it; it was exactly where I wanted it, on the right halfway between my nose and lip near the crease of my smile. I layed back and my mother grabbed my hand. It took Andy awhile to get the clamps with the amount of pressure he required. He place the clamps over my lip and held them up. He told me to take a deep breath in through my nose and out through my mouth. As i breathed out I felt a sharp pinch. It was the needle. He asked me again to take a deep breath and pulled the jewelry through, screwed the gem on, and I was finished. All in all the process took about a minute.

I've only had the monroe for about twenty-four hours and for the mean time I'm content. The pain is a dull pain, but ice seems to help. The pain actually wasn't excrutiating, in fact it didn't hurt much at all. When I got back to school, everyone loved it. I didn't expect so many comments and questions about it. At this point, I'm the only person at school with a monroe, so there are a lot of questions. Teachers don't fancy it much. I've even been asked if I could take it out; I said no.

I would recommend the monroe to anyone interested in piercings. So, if you happen to be interested, or just have questions, email me.
