Well, I have been wanting a Monroe piercing since about.. December or so, and it took me a while to talk my parents into it because I already have my labret, tongue and nose and after tongue they said that would be the last piercing. I love piercings and wouldn't take no for an answer.
Well, on Saturday (03/06/04) we went to Fort Dodge to get it done, I went in and told the girl at the counter I wanted to get my Monroe pierced and she just looked at me, and the owner and told me that she did not know how to do Marilyn Monroe piercings and the guy who did was in Ames and we should come back around 5. We went home, which is 25 miles from the piercing studio and called and asked them if the guy would for sure be there, he wasn't so they told us that he would be on Wednesday.
Monday and Tuesday took forever to pass, and it was finally Wednesday, I was really excited and just a little nervous. My mom drove me to Fort Dodge and we went in, they told us the guy wasn't there yet and we should come back later. My mom got pretty mad but told me she would wait an hour. So we went shopping for a little while and went back an hour later. We walked in and asked and she told us he was there. I filled out the form and went and sat down. It was 30 dollars, but I thought it would be 20 dollars. My mom almost didn't have enough money for it but she did. I went back there, and this guy who was a little older, but really cool was the one who was going to pierce it.
I sat down on the bench and he put on fresh rubber gloves and had a needle needle and clamps. He cleaned the area he would pierce and marked it. He marked the right side and I told him I wanted the left, so he cleaned it off and marked my left side. I didn't like the area he had marked so I asked him if he could move it up a little bit more and he said he might not be able to, and checked my lip, he was able to so he moved it up just a little bit. I liked the spot where he marked so he put the clamps on, and a girl named Kathy held them. He asked me if I was ready, and I was.. he was joking and made me really ready for it. He started to shove the needle through and it didn't really hurt, but once he got to the very last few layers of skin it did sting a little. He put the jewelry in and screwed the ball on and showed me. I LOVED it, and still do.. it still kind of burns when I smile, and I didn't think it would be completely painless. I asked him if it looked bad and he said it looked awesome. I can not wait until I can get a smaller little ball for the ring. This is probably my last piercing for a while.. I don't really like having to put the alcohol on the piercing, but this is the last day I need to, it burns some and tastes pretty gross too, but as long as my monroe doesn't get infected I'll deal with it. I love how it looks now, and I think it suits my face pretty well. A lot of people who have seen it have said it's cute too, so that makes me a lot happier about it too.
I thought that monroe would feel like labret, but monroe was a little bit more painful, I think it's because my top lip moves around a lot more than my bottom lip, chewing, smiling, talking.. and such. I think it's a really cute piercing, and if you want to get it done go for it, it's not really a piercing that would shock people, and I think it's beautiful. The little bit of burning is definately worth it, no one has made any bad comments about it. I just hope they're being honest! When I think about it, monroe is definately not as painful as some piercings are.. and I don't have a very high pain tolerance, which is what makes me nervous about getting piercings. I wouldn't even call the feeling you get when getting a monroe pain.. just a slight burning/stinging sensation which isn't that bad. If you do get your monroe done make sure you clean it well and take good care of it, it's definately a piercing you want to keep, and not want infected.
