A year ago, I never would have thought I'd be getting a Monroe piercing. In fact, I had never even seen a Monroe piercing until about six months ago. I first saw this piercing on a girl that was friends with one of my cousins. I was immediately intrigued and interested by it. I soon decided that I had to get the Monroe piercing.

The most difficult part of the whole process of getting the piercing was convincing my mom to let me do it. I am only fifteen years old, so by law she had to sign for me. I finally convinced her by telling her about all the research I had done on this piercing and how much I wanted to have it done. She gave in and said, "Fine, I'll let you, but don't whine to me if you end up not liking it."

After I settled the issue with Mom, I had to find a good, clean studio to perform the piercing. I searched the phone book and came across a studio called Colorful Skin Tattoo and Body Piercing. My cousin and friend had both been pierced there, and they said it was clean, friendly, and very professional. I called the studio and talked to Carmandy, the counter girl. She said I could be pierced that Wednesday. I didn't tell anyone at school that I was getting a Monroe piercing. I wanted it to be a huge surprise and shock.

I was excited at school all day on Wednesday. I could hardly wait until four o'clock, the time that I was scheduled to get my beautiful Monroe! Finally, the dismissal bell rang. I went home and washed off my makeup so my face would be clean for the piercing. At three forty-five, my mom and I left home and headed to Colorful Skin Tattoo and Body Piercing.

When we walked in, I could tell my mom was surprised. I don't think she knew that tattoo and piercing studios were actually clean, respectable businesses. Anyway, Carmandy greeted us and handed my mom the paperwork she had to fill out. I entertained myself by looking around at body jewelry and tattoo pictures while they finished up the legal stuff. My mom came back and sat down and we waited for the piercer, Jay, to call my name. After about ten minutes, he came in and said it was time for me to come back to the piercing room.

The piercing room was very relaxing. The walls were a nice gray-green color, and there was good music playing. I sat on the piercing table while Jay prepared the tray of tools. He explained the process and asked me some normal questions about school and my interests to help me stay calm. After he had all of the tools set out, he had me rinse with a special type of mouthwash. It was really strong. After I spit out the mouthwash, Jay wiped some type of cleaner on the outside of my lip, around the area to be pierced. He then got a purple marker and carefully marked a spot he thought would work best. I looked in the mirror and thought that it was maybe a little low. He moved it a little higher up and we agreed that it looked perfect. Next came the actual piercing.

Jay got the clamp and put it on my lip. I had heard stories that the clamp hurts really bad, but in my case, it didn't hurt at all. It was just a bit uncomfortable. I tried looking up at the ceiling so I wouldn't have to see the needle and get nervous, but then I got curious and looked at it anyway. Big mistake. The needle seemed huge. Jay could tell I was getting nervous and told me to breath deeply and close my eyes to calm down. He said he would have me breath deeply three times and on the third exhale he would put the needle though. Those three breaths seemed to last an eternity. Finally, on the third exhale, I felt the needle go through my lip. It did hurt, but not nearly as badly as I had anticipated. It felt sort of like a bad pinch from someone with sharp fingernails. I sat with the needle in my lip while Jay reached over and got the jewelry to put in. He carefully pulled the needle through my piercing and followed it with the jewelry I had selected. T he jewelry was a plain labret stud with a small steel ball. I wanted to start with something simple while I adjusted to having a new dot on my face.

I stood up slowly (so I wouldn't get dizzy) and walked over to the big mirror. I absolutely LOVED my new Monroe! It was so cute. I ran out to show my mom, and even she loved it! I've had it for almost two weeks now, and it is everything that I hoped for in a piercing! To anyone who wants to get this or any other piercing, I say go for it!
