Okay I've wanted my labret pierced for a while now, but my mom always said no. Which doesn't really make sense because she let me get my eyebrow pierced when I was 14 and then she let me get my tongue pierced only about 2 months after getting my eyebrow. I pierce my own navel about 4 months after that. After turning 15, in July, I didn't get anything pierced for about 6 months before I pierced my own lip (left side) in December. I took this out after 3 days and decided I wanted my Labret, professionally done.

After every piercing I had ever gotten, she had always told me You are not getting anything else now! And yet, somehow I always did. So I knew this would not be much of an obstacle. I asked her if she would let me get my lip pierced and she immediately said No. I kept begging for a few months and decided it would be better if I made her a deal. I told her that if I paid for it and waited until she took me then I wouldn't ask her about it. So, she said Yes, and about a month later, I finally got it.
I had decided on American Tattoo Studio because the local shop where I had gotten things pierced before, were too overpriced. So, since we lived only about 20 minutes away from Brunswick anyway, we decided to go up there one Saturday. I had heard from a friend that it was only like $20 to get things pierced there, which I was extremely happy about.
I took my friend with me and my mom picked us up and we were on our way. When we walked in, a woman asked my mom is she could help us, and my mom told her that I wanted my lip pierced. The woman gave my mom a form to sign and she photocopied her ID. She didn't ask me for any ID or for a birth certificate or anything, which surprised me. After a few minutes, and a few other customers coming in and out, a guy came out and the woman told him I wanted my lip pierced. He looked at me and asked Your labret? I told him Yes, and he got out the jewelry. He set it on the counter in front of me and told me that it would be kind of long incase it swelled or anything. He then told me to follow him back to the room. I grabbed my friend and we went back there.
When I walked in, he was getting out Listerine and told me to wash my mouth for 15 seconds, 3 times. He sat down while I did this and started to explain that that was what I would have to do to clean it. I told him that I had my tongue pierced, so I was used to the washing with Listerine after eating anything. When I was done, he told me to sit down and he put on gloves and started to clean everything. He began to get out the jewelry and needle, the clamps, and rubber band, etc. He marked the dot where it should go and asked me if it looked good, I said yes and sat back down. I accidentally touched it and he had to clean it again. He told me not to touch it again, but said that people do that all the time without thinking about it. I went to touch it again without thinking, but stopped myself when he saw me and yelled out Wait! Don't touch it! He asked me if I wanted him to use a numbing agent, and I said Sure, so he put some on. It didn't really help as much as I expected i t would.
He got the clamps, and put them on my lip. I closed me eyes, and waited for the needle. I always get nervous at this part, but I wasn't scared of the pain. It felt like time was moving in slow motion, then I felt the needle hit my skin. I could feel it go through the soft layer of tissue, then get to the thick part and slow down. I could feel him push harder as it went through the outside tough layer, and I winced. It was the most painful piercing I've had, except for my navel. Then I could feel him slip the jewelry in, and he was done. It was throbbing a little, but the most painful part was over. Now came the rush. I opened my eyes and he was cleaning the outside and wiping off the blood. I jumped up and looked in the mirror. It looked kind of weird on me, not what I expected, but I loved it. I couldn't wait for it to heal so that I could put in a hoop. He handed my friend the aftercare sheet and we walked out, after thanking him.
When me walked out my mom gave me my money and I went in and handed him a $10 tip, then walked back out. It turned out to be $40, which I wasn't happy about, but it was still cheaper than the local place. I happily paid and thanked them and went on my way.
It's been about 5 weeks, and I haven't had a single problem. It healed perfectly and I love it. I could even put a hoop in it after only 3 weeks, with no problems. I didn't clean it as much as I should have, so I would recommend if you get your labret pierced, don't do this. You should clean it after eating or drinking anything other than water. If anyone is thinking about getting their labret pierced, I would definitely recommend doing it. And, if you live in the Brunswick area, go to American Tattoo.
