I had been contemplating what to pierce since March, which is when I got my last piercing. (My inner conch.) Since I already have my lobes pierced and stretched, an industrial and my inner conch I decided it was time to move away from my ears. I was hesitant about piercing my face though because of a not-so-nice experience with my now retired naval piercing. Over the period of two years, the skin surrounding my piercing got thinner and thinner until i was starting to fear that it would fall out, plus by then the piercing was becoming a little too trendy for my liking. I wanted to aim for something different. But, I was still afraid that the facial piercing would have the same effect as my naval. After looking into the risks of lip/cheek piercings and considering them, I decided that a facial piercing was definitely an option.
At A Glance Author dyingsnowflake When It just happened Artist Name unknown. Studio Ink Fetish. Location Ontario, Canada. I looked at tons of different photos of different piercings here on BMEzine.com and after awhile, I narrowed it down to three choices; madonna, medusa or vertical labret. After staring at my face in the mirror for a half an hour and holding the balls from other jewelery up to my lip, I decided a madonna would be the perfect choice. I asked around to get other people's opinions and i got a lot of answers like, "I don't know if it would suit you" and, "That would look stupid" and, "You look prettier without it." My mom wasn't too keen on the idea of me piercing my face either but surprisingly she okayed it. I did a lot of thinking and I finally decided that my desire for the piercing was much too strong to listen to other people's opinions so I listened to myself and went for it.
It took me a couple of weeks to get the money for it and a ride to the studio and my desire was growing more each day. I was impatient! The place that I went to get it done wasn't exactly the place I wanted to go but since I was in the area at the time I decided to just go. The place I normally would have gone to charges $65 for the piercing and Ink Fetish charges $100 but my boyfriend's mom agreed to pay the $40 I didn't have so I didn't have to wait. Also, I had gotten my inner conch pierced there so I trusted them. I was also pleased to see that my piercer had her madonna done as well, which further put me at ease.
She sat me down and started getting the tools ready. By then my nerves were going crazy, I was shaking. I asked her if her madonna hurt a lot when she got it done and she replied with, "Oh my God yes! It was the most painful piercing I have ever gotten!" which didn't exactly help my situation. Now i was just plain scared, but not enough to change my mind. She checked for veins and marked a spot where the piercing was going to be. After I verified that the spot was good, she cleaned and clamped my lip. After positioning the needle under my lip she looked me in the eyes and said, "You're going to feel some pain right now." She inserted the needle and instructed me to slowly breathe in and out. It hurt constantly for about three seconds and then my lip pretty much went numb. After she put in the jewelery and asked me if I was all right, I got up and went over to the mirror to inspect. It was beautiful! I couldn't have been more satisfied. There was little swelling and little bl eeding after getting the piercing.
For the next couple days, talking and eating was a bit of a chore. I talked with little to no expression and tried not to open my mouth too wide because of the length of the bar, it gets caught on my teeth and pulls when i open my mouth too wide. I'm looking forward to changing it to a shorter bar! Rising with mouthwash after I eat is a bit of a pain but since it prevents infection it's worth it. The healing process is going well (It's only my second week) and I am more than pleased. Anyone thinking about getting a madonna, although it is not suited to everyone, it's a great piercing and you will more than likely be happy with it. I get a lot of, "Oh my God!" and "Did it hurt?" questions now but they don't bother me, I just love showing off my new silver beauty mark.
In the future, I would still consider going through with the medusa and get my eyebrow pierced but I usually leave a few months to half a year between my piercings to allow for healing.
