I've never been an adventurous girl. I got my ears pierced for the first time when I was five. When I was ten, I go the second set done, and then, as my big rebellion, the day I turned eighteen, I got a third set of holes done in my ears. I now have a total of five holes in my ears. This, I thought, was the extent of my piercing. My very dear friend had many piercings since 1994, two in the right nostril, eyebrow, tongue, seven in one ear, and five in the other, plus his nipples. This look never appealed to me. I was very happy with my plain nonmetallic face.

The day came when my baby sister turned 18. She asked for a lip piercing as her present, so my pierced friend (now boyfriend) and I took her to the piercing shop. She has a great time. She got her lip done with a 14G hoop. The shop intrigued me. The people intrigued me. Its not that I had anything against it before, but I felt that I was more attractive without metal in me.

I wanted to give my sister something really beautiful to put in her new piercing. I work for a jeweler so I started coming up with designs for an 18K white gold post with a small 1/4CT diamond on the end. I went back to the shop a few days later to talk to a piercer about what metals they recommended for something like that. The piercer talked for awhile. He explained what would work and why. He then posed a question to me. He asked me if I realized tat the best way to understand the needs of a consumer was to become one. He had a great point. I looked though all the photos. I saw the Monroe. I immediately came up with about 15 designs in my head. I told the piercer I wanted that one. He asked me if I was sure, it wasn't easily hidden and I do work for a jeweler. I said yes, that's it. It'll be easy to work on designs too. So I picked out jewelry and went to the back room.

The room was just one over from where my sister had been pierced about 4 days earlier. The piercer was very polite and realized I was doing something completely out of character. I do have two tattoos and most of the summer, neon orange hair, but piercings are so, well, severe. He had me smile and marked on my face where he thought it would be best as to not hit my cheeks while smiling. He cleaned the area (and must have changed his gloves about 5 times) and had me take three deep breathes. That bastard pushed the needle through on the first! It didn't hurt though. It didn't bleed either. The post was long (7/16") and didn't swell at all.

I got home and cleaned it and started getting used to the idea of having a metal bar through my mouth. I love it now. On day three, my mouth swelled a bit, I looked like I had a botched lip job. I drank only bottled water (to avoid having to rinse all the time) and carried around a bottle of salt water, q-tips, a bottle of diluted mouth wash (non-alcoholic of course), and bottled water. After everything that wasn't water went in my mouth, rinsed and swabbed. Every night I did a warm salt soak and swished with warm salt water to make sure the inside was good too. The piercing healed up fast.

After four weeks, I went back to have the post changed to something a little less protrusive. The 7/16" long piece was removed and was replaced with a 3/8" post. Whenever I can get back to the city, I'm having a 5/16" put in. I was told that eventually I could get down to a 1/4" post. The piercing still protrudes a little far, a little farther than I'd like. Overall though, I love the piercing.

I'm very happy with my decision. My boss finally admitted to me he finds it intimidating. My boyfriend loves it. I love it. I can't wait until I can sink a diamond into it. I've seen a lot of people with it and I have to say, I've only seen about 5 other girls that look good with it. I think the secret is that you need to have a round full face. Long thin faces don't seem to have the same effect. I've had to go back to salt soaks once a day in order to keep down the scar tissue that just appeared. I'm glad I did it. I didn't bleed, I barely swelled, and I'm very happy with my decision. Even as a jeweler, I feel it gives me a mild edge. I am now a little more interesting and with a precious stone as well, I still maintain my professionalism. It's a great addition to me. But I don't think I'll have anything else pierced visibly. Not that I don't love it, I just don't love it on me. But I am partial to the Septum....
