I had always said that madonna piercings didn't look right on most people. They mostly looked like spots and I even used to laugh at people with them. Then one of my close friends got hers done and I fell in love with it.

It was a saturday and one of the local bands were playing at one of the pubs near the tattoo studio. I had money so I decided to go and get something done. I first asked if they could fit me in for a tattoo, but the tattooist, Cliff, had an appointment due ten minutes after I asked, and my usual tattooist, Simon, was in America. I thought that as I was there I should get a piercing done, seeing as I had a list as long as my arm of things I wanted pierced.

I sat talking to Cliff, whilst he waited for his client to turn up.

'What about your nipple?' he asked. I only knew two girls with their nipples done and they both said it really hurt. Plus, I wasn't too keen on my bra being pressed against it straight afterwards, so, that idea was out of the window.

'Hmm, well what about your septum?' Somebody had told me this hurt a lot, so again I threw that idea out of the window.

'Your madonna?' My sister suggested. I stared into the mirror for half an hour, deciding if it would suit me or not and after asking everybody that was in the shop at the time and every body saying it would look nice, Andy said he would be ten minutes getting ready.

Charlot, my friend who had it done, said it didn't hurt, so I wasn't really nervous. Ten minutes later, Andy called me through. He talked me through the procedure and marked on where he was going to pierce. It looked fine to me, but I went and asked my sister and Cliff aswell. After I got their approval Andy told me to lie back on the chair and relax.

He pulled my lip up and sprayed it on both sides. I could feel it freezing and didn't expect any pain. 'The needles going to go through now' Andy said. Seconds later, I felt a huge stab in my lip. It was sort of like biting your lip by accident, but MUCH worse.

Andy laughed and said he was going to put the bar in. I couldn't feel it as my mouth was numbed by the pain it had just been through. After the jewellery had been put in, I sat up and Andy wiped away the blood. I looked in the mirror and it had made a huge difference to the way I looked. 'You look like a junk yard with all that metal' Andy joked. At the time I had my Lowbret, nose and tongue pierced aswell.

I walked back into the reception area and Cliff, whos client still hadn't showed, said it suited me, which made me feel better. Gemma, my sister, said I should take one my piercings out as I had too many facial ones.

We went straight to the gig so I didn't have a chance to clean it properly. Throughout the night I could feel it swelling it, but I didn't think it would be noticeable. I fancied the singer of the band, so I was trying to flirt and forget about the pain of my lip. He kept staring at it, so I quickly dragged Gemma to the toilets to look at it. When I saw it I nearly cried. The whole of the left side of my was dropping down and it look deformed. For the rest of the night I avoided the singer.

The next morning I woke up and it was even worse. I cleaned it with saline and hoped it would get better quickly. In the afternoon I went into town and saw one of the boys I used to hang around with 'Whats up with your trout pout?' he asked. i quickly went home and rang Rawhide to see if it normally swelled up this badly. Andy said it did and not to worry.

A week later the swelling went down and I put a smaller bar in, I wasn't meant to change it this quickly, but the big bar was annoying me. I ended up taking out my lowbret stud because of all the metal and although I miss it now, I'm glad I did because I love my madonna. I'm not sure if it was worth all that pain, because it did really hurt and although I've been thinking about getting one the other side, I'm pretty certain I wouldn't. The only downside to the piercing is it looks like a spot in pictures.
