Piercings are becoming more and more trendy it seems. Not if you live in a small, suburban town, as I do. You see, I'm considered a "punk". I listen to the hardcore music and am the one who dyes their hair all the time. Needless to say, my town wasn't surprised by much that I did. So when I decided to get my labret pierced, it really didn't take anybody by surprise, well, for the most part.

I wanted to get something original. I saw that belly button piercings were becoming more and more found, as were tongue rings. I wanted originality. I went to a show in the city, and met my now current boyfriend, who had it pierced, and I thought it was adorable. I just kept seeing myself with one, and decided that it was something I really wanted to do. So I began the pleading with my mother. She's quite a stickler and is all for me going with a conforming look, but eventually, my dad got to her better half, and I won that argument. I kept out 60 dollars, and kept it away until I could eventually go and get it.

My 18th birthday was soon approaching, and that means I could get it done by myself without the hassle of dragging my mom out with me. Instead, I took my boyfriend with me, and he took me to his piercer who had before done his labret.

We went on my 18th birthday and drove to this local piercing place. My stomach had butterflies the whole way there. I had never gotten a body piercing before, so of course I was a little nervous. When we got there, there were a few people ahead of me, but I didn't mind the wait. We just looked around at the various jewelry and tattoos. The people who were the previous of me didn't take very long at all, so I made it in fairly quickly. I walked into a big white and black checkered room and found the piercer in there getting out all his new equipment and sanitizing up the surrounding area. He was incredibly nice and made me feel much better. He sat down and explained what he'd be doing to me, so I wasn't as nervous, and it really did help. And then, it was about to happen.

I watched him spread out all the equipment and much of it reminded me of a dreaded trip to the dentist. He told me not to worry, that he'd be "gentle". He grabbed the clamps and placed them onto my lower lip. I gripped onto my boyfriend's hand as he made the mark. So far so good. Then he told me that the worst part was coming up. So I closed my eyes and gripped super hard onto my boyfriend's hand and I felt the needle thread through. It didn't hurt as bad as I thought! Of course, I will not lie. It did hurt a bit. But more discomfort than pain. He put the post in and told me take a look at my newfound piece of jewelry. Spectacular. It was adorable. I loved it, and kept finding myself looking at it. It just appalled me. He explained to me about the cleaning procedure and everything I would need to do to keep it all nice and clean. I didn't want to screw it up. Infections are gross and I'd rather do without one.

It was hard to eat that evening. I just kept a chunk of ice between my inner lip to keep the swelling down, which was good, cause I didn't have much at all. It was difficult to chew, difficult to kiss, and at times difficult to talk. But it wasn't a big deal. It went away shortly and I was back to my normal self in no time.

After some short time, I went back and got a shorter post for it because it was just causing a disruption being so bulgy from my mouth. Plus, the littler one was adorable.

Labret piercings are most definitely a piercing I would recommend to people. It's cute yet subtle and it expresses something more than just getting a tongue piercing or a belly button piercing. Which are basically just becoming trendy. I love my piercing and I've had it for about a year. True, I do have to take it out for my job, but I just put a retainer in and put the regular jewelry in when I get home at nighttime. It's a cute piercing with not a lot of hassle. Most of my family is used to seeing me with it now and don't give me slack. A lot of local people still give me funny looks as I walk by with a piercing in my face and my hair painted pink. But I don't mind. It's all part of being an individual. Or something like that.
