So I got my very first piercing today. Well technically my earlobes were my first, but that happened when I was a baby.

I felt good since the test seemed pretty effortless and I wanted to celebrate somehow. I debated on how to spend this Friday afternoon. My boyfriend is out of town and all of my friends had plans. So I thought about going to a movie by myself or going shopping and spending ridiculous amounts of money. But none of these things seemed fulfilling. So out of nowhere the idea of getting my eyebrow pierced popped into my head. Now, I've been thinking about getting this for a while. Ever since I was in high school. When I was younger I knew my parents would never allow it, and as I got older, I had jobs in which I was sure I'd be too severely judged for a facial piercing. Also, there have been times when I've been close to making the decision of getting my eyebrow pierced, but there have always been rock concerts only a few weeks away and the thought of getting my piercing ripped off in a mosh pit have detoured me.
Now, I'm 21 and I've been jobless for almost a year and I could care less about what future employers think of me because they don't seem to want to hire me anyway. And while I have a concert to attend in a month and a half, I'm going to sacrifice myself and play it safe by staying away from the pit.
So I went to the bathroom at school and I looked at both my eyebrows. One of my eyes is naturally a bit bigger than the other and also has a nicer arch. I guess you could say it's my preferred eye. So I decided I'd do the other eye because if for some reason I ever decided to take the piercing out and it scarred, I'd still have my nicer eyebrow in tact.
Deciding where to get it pierced wasn't even an issue as everyone I know gets their piercing/tattoos done at New Tribe (Toronto). It's clean and very professional so I had no worries in that respect. I headed over without an appointment and I had to wait only 10 minutes. The whole time I sat there waiting I wondered if I was making a mistake by doing this in such a spur of the moment. But I knew I wasn't since I'd actually pondered this for about 7 years. I'm also glad I'm doing it now as opposed to when I was younger, because the discovery of my preferred eye has only happened in the last couple of years. ;P
Finally I was called up and my piercer RJ, took me into a little room. I've accompanied many of my friends to get pierced at New Tribe, and as always, their rooms are very clean and this is always comforting. He asked me if I knew which side I wanted, which I already did. Then he explained that I may have a problem with infections if I wear too much makeup near the piercing. I do wear heavy eye makeup, but luckily I have a large space between my eye and my eyebrow, so I can still stay away from the piercing without sacrificing my makeup. He sanitized the area and then asked me to choose exactly where I wanted it. I honestly hadn't thought much about the actual positioning so I mostly went on his advice as to where it looked good. I just wanted it off the side, but not too far off my eyebrow.
He drew two little dots where he would puncture the holes. That was when I started to get nervous about the pain. I've heard mixed reactions about pain when it comes to eyebrow piercings. He told me it hurt no more than plucking a few hairs out at the same time. Of course, I thought he wasn't being totally honest. I mean, he was going to punch a hole through an entire chunk of skin, and it would be equivalent to pulling out a few hairs? So he then asked me to lie down on the bench. He started playing around with my skin and told me since my skin is very thin and stretchy, it would be easier to pierce as opposed to thick skin, so that made me feel a lot better. He put the clamp on and took a minute to position it at the perfect spot. Right when he was about to pierce it, he told me to take a deep breath, and as he pushed the needle through he told me to exhale. This really helped. The pain was very minimal. It did feel a bit like plucking your eyebrows but a bit more intense. It was very quick and the pain didn't last more than a few minutes, so I was relieved about that. But I'm pretty good with pain, so I believe it when other people say it killed them.
RJ gave me a little card that explained how to take care of my piercing and let me know that if I had any questions I could always come in, call or email him.
It is now about 10 hours later and my piercing looks great. I have very sensitive skin so I was worried about getting very swollen or bleeding too much. But currently, there is no swelling and there is no blood whatsoever. I know it's still quite early, but the fact I'm off to a good start makes me pretty confident that this piercing will be a success.
It also looks like I've had this my whole life. It really suits my face, so I'm pretty happy about that.
Overall, this was a pretty good experience and I expected nothing less. However, I'm afraid that I may be back for more piercing in the near future. :)
