I'm not sure how I finally decided to get my eyebrow pierced. Maybe I was just looking for something else to pierce. It wasn't something I had wanted for long, or had even really thought about. I was just driving around one day, and the thought hit me "hey...I wonder what I'd look like with my eyebrow pierced". I didn't do it that day, but it didn't take long. I thought a little more about it, and everyone I've seen that had it done seems to look nice with it. I've been often told I have very pretty eyes, and I thought an eyebrow piercing might accentuate that feature more.

On the day I was going to get it done, my very conservative aunt happened to call me just before I left. I knew her views on piercings but I make my own decisions based on what I want, what I like, and my own reasoning. I told her I couldn't talk, and why. The first thing she said was "at your age?" like there's some sort of age limit at which you can no longer pierce your eyebrow. I asked her what she meant, and she said that she usually associated that piercing with high school kids trying to piss off their parents. She actually didn't make too big of a stink about it, and it wouldn't have mattered anyway...it was what I wanted.

I got to my favorite shop and told them what I wanted. I knew I wanted a barbell, because I thought it would look best on me and didn't really like the look of rings on anyone. As I was sitting in the piercing area waiting for my piercer to get ready, I became a little more nervous. Not because of the pain, because that's never a factor for me anyway, but because it was my first obvious, facial piercing. Would I like it? Would it change how others viewed me? Things like that were going through my head until I approved my marks and my piercer had me lay back and close my eyes. No turning back now, I thought.

He cleaned my eyebrow and told me to stay nice and still. He did the piercing freehand, which is good, because the clamps probably would have been more painful than the piercing. He did the usual deep breath in, pierce on the slow breath out and the needle went through. I barely felt it. Honestly. Tweezing my eyebrows hurts worse than this did. He did the jewelry exchange, gave me a minute to make sure I was OK, and then I went and looked at it. I was a little scared at first, but when I got to the mirror, I had my usual reaction, which is "well, this doesn't look right because I'm not used to it, but I think I will like it".

Aftercare was a bit of a challenge though. The good thing is the piercing barely swelled and only felt like a mild bruise. The bad thing is, how do you wash your eyebrow when you're not in the shower? I usually clean my piercings twice a day when they're new, and I'm not personally a huge fan of salt soaks, so I just use either Satin or Provon soap. There I was, bent over the sink, washing my eyebrow with that eye closed, and trying to rinse it the same way. I got soap in my eye every damned time.

The only problem I really had with it was a couple weeks after it was done when I stayed over at a friend's house. I hadn't planned on staying over so I didn't have any cleaning supplies with me, and frankly by the time we got back I'd have been too tired to do it anyway. When I looked at the piercing the next day, it was mildly pussy and irritated, but it wasn't anything a few days of warm compresses and extra cleaning didn't fix.

Considering this is a piercing I didn't really plan on, it's my favorite one of all I have. I think it looks great on me, and it does indeed bring my eyes out more. Shortly after I got it done, no one including the rest of my family really even noticed, and to the few people I made mention of it to, they thought I had always had it done. I think it's good that it's that subtle...that means it probably looks like it "belongs" there. This is also the only piercing I wear fancier jewelry in, like gemstones or other more unusual ends. Most of the other piercings just have a standard CBR or colored BB in them. I like drawing attention to this one though, and I actually think dressing it up makes a nice contrast to my other piercings. I can make it look "classy and mature" or a little more "rebellious and fun" depending on what kind of jewelry I choose for the occasion. I think it suits my "age" and place in my life right now just fine.

I would definitely recommend this piercing. For me, there was almost no pain involved, and on most people it looks very nice. It's also a fun and versitile piercing to have as there are so many different jewelry options for it and since it's so noticable without being gaudy (unless you choose it to be), your nice jewelry will actually get noticed.
