Let me start off by saying that I am not much of a random person and I do not get body mods on the spur of the moment, but this time I did. I had my septum pierced once before by a completely inexperienced piercer who pierced it way too low. After a lot of pain and discomfort I removed it. After the area healed I was determined to get it redone correctly. I had been planning for months to get this piercing but due to some financial difficulties I put it on hold for a while.

Recently my wife and I had our third wedding anniversary and to celebrate we decided to spend a few nights in Virginia Beach. We were married on February 11th, 2005. One day while we were there we were walking down Atlantic Avenue checking out the beach shops and we happened to come across a store called The Rock Shop. We both collect different types of rocks and stones so we decided to check it out. As soon as we entered we were greeted by two men standing behind a long counter having lunch. As my wife looked around I noticed a sign that said they also did body piercings above the waist. The sign also said all piercings were ten dollars plus the price of jewelry. I felt a little weird about how low the price was so I asked to see a portfolio and they did not have one. One rule I have lived by until this point was to never get any work done by someone who does not have a portfolio. The guys reassured me that they have been doing piercings for over ten years and that everything is autoclaved. They also pointed out some certificates on the wall for sterilization. Before I made my final decision my wife asked them why their piercings were so cheap. They said due to competition they lowered their prices which made sense to me. I have had my labret pierced three times and on the second one the artist was only charging twenty dollars. I decided what the hell and figured I would go for it.

I showed them my drivers license and filled out the necessary paperwork. After paying for the piercing it was time to pick my jewelry. I wanted a CBR but my wife's grandma made us promise her we would not get any more tattoos or piercings so I decided to get a retainer. One of the men called me in to a back room where I immediately saw the autoclave as well as the piercing tools being opened from sterile packages. While the man doing the piercing prepared, the other man was asking us what brought us to the beach. We told him it was our third anniversary. He congratulated us as the other guy finished preparing and we were ready to go. The man took a few moments to clean the inside of my nostrils and make his markings. He then applied the septum clamp and got it set up just right. a lot of people say the clamps are the worst part but they never really bother me. After that he asked me if I was ready. I took in a deep breath and said yes. Whenever I get pierced the piercer always asks me to take in a deep breath and let it out slowly but this one did not. He just went through with the needle which did not bother me. The first time I got pierced it hurt much worse than this. I surprisingly did not even shed a single tear from the sensation. He jokingly said "You mean you're not going to punch me for that?" I smiled and said that it did not hurt but they did not believe me. He followed through with the jewelry and I was done. I shook his hand and stood up from the bench I was sitting on. After looking around in the shop another minute or two we left. It was then raining so we went immediately back to our hotel.

I have had the piercing four days and have not had one single problem with it. There is no discomfort or pain and it has been very easy to clean. As soon as it heals I would like to stretch it to a 12g and put in a CBR. Until then I will just have to settle with flipping the retainer up whenever I am around my wife's grandma. The best advice I could give for this piercing is make sure you have a piercer who knows what they are doing. I admit I took a chance with this one and it paid off in the end. Before I got my first septum I wasn't very sure of this piercing but after seeing it on my wife I fell in love with it and it is now my favorite piercing. If you want a septum piercing I would highly recommend it.
