When I was about 9, I was doing groceries with my Mom when I saw a man picking out fruits, and he had what I called at the time, a "bull ring". After we came home that day I could not help but be intrigued by it, and after a few months of thinking about it all the time, I envied it, but, OBVIOUSLY it was a no-go, hello, I was 9.

My dad had came from an ethnicity where he was very much involved in tribal body art (tattoos, piercing s, which he has had done). I was always fascinated by the work he had gotten done. My mother was against this, given the fact that she's against anything that remotely has to do with him. Well, while out of the country with him (My parents are divorced), I went into the tattoo shop he just got work done at. While looking through some magazines, I came across a picture of a Native-American looking man with a septum ring, and that triggered the obsession/coveting/want all over again. This picture then triggered a massive research on the piercing for about two years. Did it hurt? What part of "septum" did the needle pierce? How much did it cost? What kind of jewelry could you wear in it? What was ALL the history behind it? Have celebrities got it done (I hear Scarlet Johansson had it done recently) ? After years of careful thought, I decided that I HAD to get this done.
I did research for the right place in my area, but you HAD to be 18 to even step into some of the parlors around here. If they would let you in, Parental ID was required, even for Ear Lobe piercing. I think the laws were different, too. My mom thought the piercing was "ugly", "too tribal", "manly" and didn't see the time in her day to accompany me to go to check out some of the parlors I found (but then again, even if this was the prettiest thing in the world, she would not do it, she always has 'better' things to do). We only had one car, (uh, we still do) we and weren't close to the city. I did not want to wait. I was crushed. However, when I found out that the only piercing place that would do it here was more upstate and please, mommy please could I go? No. Duh.
But not all hope was lost! I knew I had a friend who I'd be seeing on vacation (Where the piercing regulations are slightly different too, tsk, tsk) who was a professional piercer. So I gave him a ring on my 3rd day there. It went down pretty much like this.
"Hey."
"Hey."
"Dude, I'm around town, was wondering if I could get my septum pierced."
"Uh, okay...When?"
"Today."
He was rather shocked, but that's okay :]
I ran into town around 2ish in the afternoon when he called me and told me to come over, since he owned a kind of small studio in his house and couldn't drive out to the shop. His house was very close, and I was, ecstatic. The rest from here was kind of a blur, but when I saw him, we greeted each other and I sat down. Papers, questions, YEAH, YEAH GET TO IT! I could hear him getting out his needles, and my heart was doing cartwheels in my chest. Woo-Hoo! I felt strange, dangling my hands off the dentist-like chair. He was really bothering me, changing his gloves every millisecond and feeling my nose. Finally, the cold and familiar piercing clam was on and I just zoned out. Looking at the ceiling. I felt the needle go through the first layer, and the last layer made me feel like my eyes were turning red, but I couldn't be able to tell you that it hurt, because I've had mustache waxes, cat scratches, and haircuts gone wrong that hurt more than that. Once he slid the jewelry in, he gave me a mirror to look at it and I smiled a huge ridiculous smile to myself. I couldn't believe my childhood dream (ha) was finally fulfilled! I paid him and tipped him a little too much, gave him a hug, and said we'd chill later.
For the rest of the day I skipped down the street like a lunatic until dinner at my dad's. My dad was happy that I chose a plastic retainer, and It was easy to flip up and such (people have told me I have a good septum piercing nose...) so I could hide it from Mommy Dearest. It gave me no problems, No blood, oozing, pain of any sort.
On My first night back home, Mom didn't notice a thing. BUT my retainer slipped out in my sleep...first night back. I had it for about a week, so it wasn't going to close up right away. Thinking fast, I found an old 12g (I was pierced at 14g) CBR and tried to put it through, but it irritated my nose. I settle don my old Half-hoop Monroe ring, which was titanium and 14g. I could flip it up, but it was stubborn and wouldn't stay up. It was also titanium, and I am VERY metal sensitive. My nose was rejecting this, and so I just cleaned it with sea salt.
My troubles did not end there. In a nutshell, let me document the next couple frustrating weeks:
It was winter, and it was getting cold here, and I was very stressed with exams. So, I got sick. My stuffy, runny nose, and the dry heat gradually irritated my nose, and I got scabbies near my hole. An infection was forming. I went down in size to a barbell earring. ( It was metal. And noticeable. My mom- who was freaked out beyond words, made me take it out, AND it bled. Stupid). Then I stretched up to a 16g plastic ring behind her back. Then I shed a few tears and took it out. I'd wash my hands and play with the hole in school even to make sure it didn't close. Now it seems to be doing fine again, and since I took the jewelry out after the 3 week healing time, I can still probably wear my old retainer and jewelry. I continue to clean it, even though now, I am sick AGAIN so its not a really good time to put it back in.
While I had it, I was really happy with this piercing. I've had so many more ANNOYING troubles that weren't my fault but more of the piercing altogether's with past work done. I recommend that you don't however, change the ring so many times when its barely healed. Bad aftercare on my part. I only know one other person who has had it done, so therefore it is really unique, in my opinion. I have a high pain thresh hold, but generally, the septum is supposed to hurt. . But not too much, I guess. It was totally worth it, in my opinion, and if I have to, I'll do it again as many times necessary. So to anyone contemplating getting this done, I totally suggest that you do it!
