Well ever since I was younger I've been obsessed with piercings and tattoos but seeing as I had extremely strict parents I couldn't really get any facial piercings. When I started looking at piercings that you can actually hide that's when I fell in love. The septum, id only seen a few people with this modification and all of them men. I started looking up as much information as I could on every piercing website I could find. This was the one and my heart was solely set on it.

After ogling at hundreds of girls with the beautiful piece of metal on Deviant art I decided to set a date. This happened quite a few times and on every occasion I wimped out. Always keeping in my mind that it's supposed to be very painful! Also the fact my dad would probably rip it out, it's not the nicest thing to find imbedded in your oh so "innocent" daughters face :/.

A few months after all of this I went to Glasgow with my college art class. After completely forgetting about the idea one of my friend Dom decided he was randomly going to get a surface pubis piercing, another two of my friends Richie and Dan decided they were going to give him moral support and get the tops of their ears pierced. Suddenly I jumped at the chance at finally getting my dream and 5 minutes later I found myself with all three of them inside the closest body mod studio.

Now I think the whole reason I didn't chicken out this time was the fact before I had the chance to even rethink what I was doing I was there, and signing the forms. While standing waiting for the guy to look over all of the forms I was astounded by all of the mods that he had. I asked if the septum really hurt as much as I'd read. He smiled politely and said "no more than an ordinary nose piercing done with a needle". Not knowing what this felt like I just nodded and hoped that didn't feel bad.

I was last, and after Richie and Dan both emerged with fresh piercings Dom got cold feet and decided against his idea! Determed to do this I followed the piercer into the little white room behind the counter.

When I got in had butterflies so bad it was almost crippling! I sat on the cushioned bench and he put on his gloves and started preparing the needles and laying them on some fresh kitchen role. "Now this parts worse than the actual piercing part!" he laughed. He pulled out this cotten bud soaked in some green solution and wiped out the insides of my nose. Now this here actually burned like hell!!In fact I'm sure he burned all the nose hairs off :/!!

Next he made me lay down and told me to relax. I was actually strangely calm by this point. He brought over the needle and stood over me. "Close your eyes if it makes you feel better". This is when I got nervous, now I thought to get it straight you had to use clamps...apparently not. I felt the tip of the needle touch the inside of my nose. "Now I'm gunna count to 3, I want you to take a deep breath and start to exhale while I'm on 2". The second I exhaled it went through. The pain was extremely intense but lasted no longer than 2 seconds. After that everything felt numb as my face tightened.

"Now I'm just going to insert the jewellery, you may feel some pulling" Again I couldn't actually feel anything by this point as I think the adrenaline had taken effect. He inserted the black titanium retainer and removed the needle. It felt as though it popped as it went through. He used pliers to turn the bar up into my nose. I sat up and he gave me a tissue to wipe the tears from my eyes. "All done" he announced. I went straight over to the mirror to have a look. But I couldn't actually see it at all which amazed me! I paid him and got reunited with my friends who were completely amazed with my random decision. On the way back to meet the rest of my class mates I felt like I had been punched in the face. I could hardly talk and I felt like crying if I tried to smile the pain was so intense!

4 days later I returned home, with the parents not suspecting a thing I kept disappearing to the toilet to clean my new piercing. Soon I realised something was wrong because I got told that it took around 8 weeks to heal. Yet 3 months passed by and it still hadn't healed fully. It still kept getting crusted and stung when I turned it down. Determined not to take it out I grinned and bared it, and also got a shiny horse shoe ring for it! Eventually 9 months later it was healed ^-^

I had noticed that it was slightly crooked but that didn't bother me in the slightest. Now a year and 2 months later I went to get my frowny pierced. Only to be asked in the process by the kind woman in hype if my septum was painful. As she had hers done I thought it was an odd question to ask. I told her it took a stupid amount of time to heal but it was worth it. She seemed shocked. I then realised why! My beautiful septum piercing actually goes straight through the CARTLIDGE!

I had been paying so much attention to how gorgeous the piercing was that I had never noticed that instead of going through the small piece of flesh it was through the cartlidge instead! No wonder it had been so painful and took so long to heal. Appently she thought I must have been so brave and even commented that it was probably more painful than ANY other piercing ha-ha. That amused me because now I'm not scared to get anymore.

A year and 3 months later I still have my septum done and I wouldn't take it out for the world. And recently a few people I know have gotten threres done. And I love mine way more because it rests nicely in my nose, where as theirs looks as though it's right on the tip almost falling out. So my advice to anyone getting theirs done is to make sure that they clamps to that its pierced straight, and that its pierced through the thin piece of skin instead of the cartridge. Unless you want it done there of course.
