It all started about six months ago. My friend decided that she wanted to get her nose pierced, and she wanted me to go with her. Of course I immediately started thinking of what I wanted to get pierced myself. I needed something at the time that wouldn't be visible because I worked in retail, and for some dumb reason it is looked down upon. So I pondered the possibilities, and already having my tongue, nipples, ears, eyebrow and lip done at one point or another I decided to get my septum pierced.

I didn't know anyone that had their septum pierced so I couldn't really ask anyone their experience on it. But that didn't deter me, I still wanted it done. I went to the best piercing resource I know (bmezine.com of course) and read through stories and gazed at pictures. So the day finally came when my friend and I went to the parlor. She was very nervous about getting her nostril pierced and wouldn't stop fidgeting during the car ride.We finally pull up to the shop and walk in. It was a very slow day at Forever Yours Tattoo, which was nice. They ask me how they can help us and I explained that I wanted to get my septum pierced and my friend wanted to get her nose done. Christina, the piercer, said ok and went to setup for the procedures.

I've had a few of my piercings done at this shop, so I was more than comfortable in the atmosphere. Christina informs us that she is ready and we walk into her booth. I decided to go first, because I wanted to get it over with, and my friend was still kinda nervous. So I lay down on the table and she cleans the inside of my nose out with some disinfectant, which was a horrible smell that lasted for about 2 days. She asked me if I was ready and I said go for it. She placed the clamps which I barely felt, and counted to 3 and shoved the needle through. It was a quick pinch, barely felt it. She removed the clamps with the needle still sticking through my septum, I got a kick out of that. She put the retainer in (which is what I opted for so that I could easily flip it into my nose during work) and said I was done. I looked in the mirror and thought it was the coolest thing ever. She had pierced it at a 16 gauge I believe, at my request. But now I am wanting to gauge it, so I would recommend starting at a larger gauge.

I waited as my friend got her nostril done (which also turned out great) and talked with the piercer about cleaning it. She said it will heal relatively fast because of the bacteria in my nose, and that there isn't much cleaning involved.

It was virtually pain free until I accidentally bumped my nose, and it sent a sharp pain up my nose. So I was very careful for the next few days about not touching it (not easy to do when you have allergies). The next morning I woke up and rubbed my face in my pillow (just a weird habit I have) completely ignorant to the fact that I had just got my septum pierced, and that was the worst pain.

Heeding my piercers advice I didn't clean it, and after 3 days I was able to flip it into my nose without too much pain. The first time I did have to flip it into my nose however, it was really painful, my eyes watered from the stinging and it took a few minutes to do. After about a week there was no tenderness to speak of, it felt completely healed. I mainly keep it flipped up in my nose so no one can see it, and people always ask me why I don't wear it down.. I like having this secret little piercing on my face. I would recommend to anyone considering to get their septum pierced to just do it. It is a very unique piercing and I will admit its fun to play with (even though it looks like you are picking you nose)

I returned to Forever Yours about 4 months after getting my septum pierced to get my eyebrow re-done and had them check out my nose. She said it healed great, and she was quite proud of herself because of how straight she pierced it.

The only downside to this piercing is my nose sometimes really itches if it moves too much, and when you get a cold it is a pain to deal with every time you blow your nose. But you have to make some sacrifices to have what you want.
