I have had a nose piercing on the left side of my nose for almost two years at this point. My friend Nadine and I got ours pierced very close together (time wise). It was my first personal "official" piercing other than my ears.

A few months ago, Nadine and I were scrolling through Suicide Girl photos on the site and came across a girl with both sides of her nose pierced. We commented on how we both quite liked it, but I didn't give it much more thought. I didn't really intend to get any more piercings after my snakebites. Later that night she had gotten a hold of the Suicide Girls dvd, which just so happened to feature a SG who also had both sides pierced!
It began to really intrigue me. It seemed so much more balanced and seemed to suit their faces better than if they had only one. Would this principle work for me too? I felt asymmetrical with my unbalanced facial piercings, and it began to bug me.
Finally Nadine decided she was going to get the other side of her nose pierced. Now, Nadine has pretty bad luck with her piercings. She's had her wrist, chest, scrumper, various areas of her ear and arm pierced, and all have given her some form of trouble. She came to the decision that she would get it done with a needle rather than a gun, at our local mall. I wouldn't usually support her decision to go to a mall for the piercing, but as I had all mine done there to much success, I thought it would be best. We went in one afternoon and enquired about the price, she went out the back and I hung out the front for a while. She came out later and said she would be getting pierced now. Whether it was with a gun or needle, I never found out ( should probably ask her...). She got it done and came out to show everyone. It looked great and I was really impressed at how even they pierced it to the opposing nose stud.
I was even more motivated after this experience to get my second nose piercing. I wanted to be symmetrical so badly. I was very low on cash at this point, I hadn't been working as often and I owed my parents money. The thought of trying to save the prospecting $60 sounded difficult and timely. I was impatient! I wanted it now!!
Later that afternoon I was wandering through my house when I spotted one of the hundreds of sewing needles that litter our house. I had never self-pierced before, but the thought began to grow. The convenience was so tempting. Pierced for nothing? Sounded perfect.
I thought to myself... "why the fuck not" and grabbed a few supplies. Now, I am a person who knows almost an unhealthy amount of information about piercing procedure and aftercare, so I knew what I was in for and the possible ramifications of this shoddy home piercing job I was about to embark upon. I boiled some water and chucked some Dettol in it, and put a sewing needle and an old nose stud to sit in there for a few minutes. I don't really understand how the use of ice to numb could really make a difference, but I gave it a go anyways, and held some to my nose while I was waiting.
I grabbed a few tissues and picked up the needle. Yes, a regular hand sewing needle. Jesus Christ, in retrospect, what the FUCK was I thinking? I began to consider a good spot on my nose. I needed to mark it before I pierced it, of course. A factor I had managed to forget! I wanted to pierce it on the same angle as the left sides so I stuck a blunt needle through the other hole and saw which was it was pointing. I then roughly measured the correct placement and picked up the needle again. I pushed a little. Resulting in a little bit of pain. I pushed a little again. More pain. I took a breather for a second. I wasn't very far in, but I had pushed enough to make a mark. I pushed a little bit more, and my eyes watered a little. Pushed a little more. There was a little blood, but not much. There was pain though! I kept up this gradual light pushing up until I was about halfway through the flesh. It was getting tougher! I was going to have to grit my teeth and push harder. It was at this point I realized I would need something to prevent the needle going into the inside of my nose when I got it through, so I grabbed a spoon on my table and put the end in my nose. Haha, ohhh dear. I kept pushing. Mooore fucking blood, more pain, even worse now. I was almost to the last bit of skin, and it was proving to be hard to pierce. ARGH! I had to push hard against the spoon. I felt with my finger, I could feel the point of the needle through the skin, but it wouldn't go through.
One last SHOVE! And It was through.
Queue blood and further confusion as to what I should do next. I prepared myself to pull the needle out and pulled hard. It came out okay, and I quickly got the nose stud and PUSHED INTO THE HOLE. At this point I think I did some damage to the inside tissue of my nose, not surprisingly. It was having difficulty fitting in. It took me about 5 minutes to get it through, but when it did, it was even with the other and looked really good! There was little pain now, perhaps a light throbbing but mainly bearable.
I still have the piercing to this day. It has healed mainly well, although there is still a little lump next to the hole, under the skin (it's not visible but I can feel it with my fingers) which I think is some scarring. I barely did any aftercare, but somehow it healed anyways. I'm extremely surprised and grateful that it has healed. Did I mention I am PROUD? Haha.
BUT! I do not encourage home piercing jobs kids. They can be really fucking messed up. More often than not the piercing doesn't work out. I'm very lucky that mine healed okay.
