I've wanted a face piercing since I was young, but I've since then

pierced my lobes (which are now gauged to a 4) and my cartilage (which has closed up over the past year), therefore my mother (who thinks every facial piercing looks absolutely horrendous) told me to keep the number of holes in my body the same until I was 18 years old. I am 14, 15 next month, and being the youngest in my grade, I have not been happy watching all my friend's parents allow them to get body piercings. I was informed yesterday that my friend had gotten her monroe pierced by a (licensed piercer) family friend. I thought to myself, "This has to end, I need to have a piercing experience of my own!"

I took a quiz a few years ago, 'What Piercing Are You?', and my results were a septum piercing. The first thought that ran through my mind was "Ewwww. That's disappointing." Not until now had I realized all the possibilities available for septum piercings. Nowadays, this piercing is becoming more and more popular, and It's the only one I'd be able to hide from my parents, and for future job interviews. I have also seen girls looking very lovely with their cute little septum horse shoe rings. So yesterday, after complaining to my friend (who had gotten her lip pierced the day before) about my lack of a septum ring, she convinced me to get it done for $30 by the friend who did her lip. He was also a licensed piercer, however, he did NOT need parental consent. "Well, when can I plan on it?" I asked. She said, "Tomorrow?" And from there it was history. I got ready today and we went out and bought these tiny little horseshoe shaped rings with balls on the ends. I wanted to find a septum retainer and wear it until it healed completely, but we must have looked everywhere in the mall, and they didn't have them anywhere. I had heard of flipping up horse-shoe rings so that they became almost invisible, but to NOT count on them that way. If they aren't the right size, they could distort your piercing especially if you have to pull and tug if your nostrils aren't big enough. The rings we bought were 16G, close to the 14G needles people usually pierce their septums with.

We went to the piercer's house (which was three streets down from mine!), and he prepared for the piercing. He didn't sterilize the area, but the needle was just out of the package, and he wore gloves. Overall, I'd have to say it wasn't the best environment but he seemed like he knew what he was doing. By that time I was getting nervous. He clamped my nose and my eyes began to water from the pressure. To top it off, seven kids from my high school were there sitting at the table, just watching me. One had pierced his own septum in the past and said he didn't feel any pain, and one had also pierced his own septum, still had it in, and said it hurt like hell. I didn't know what to believe! But I had been looking so forward to that moment, there was no stopping me. The piercer told me to take a deep breath. I did, and maybe it was a little too deep. "Don't snort the needle!" he said. We had a good laugh but the nerves became worse. In went the needle painlessly. When he tried putting my ring in, it wouldn't fit. His 16G needle was smaller then my 16G ring. He didn't have a 14G needle, either. Instead, he picked up a 12 GAUGE NEEDLE and re pierced the area. That's where things got painful. The pain was indescribable, but did not last long when the ring was finally put into the hole. I bled a couple drops, nothing major, and it was over.

My friend proceeded to get hers pierced, and ended up making me feel like a trooper. She shed a few tears, surprisingly, from someone who has pierced her own lip in my bathroom with a safety pin in the past. I got home tonight and took some ibuprofin immediately. I plan on cleaning it regularly and taking very, very good care of it. When it gets close to healing, I'm going to take a horseshoe ring out and maybe put in a full captive ring. I'm going to experiment with this one.

My first face piercing. Very painful. But VERY worth it. My parents won't ever know. Please note, I did put a lot of thought into this piercing. Although actually doing it was very spontaneous, I had done plenty of research and known what I needed to know before getting this piercing. My body is not fully grown, and piercing my body while It's still growing could leave me with scarring or unwanted modifications. Call it teenage rebellion, call it whatever you wish. All i have to say is im extremely happy with how it turned out.
