Hey I'm a 20 year old Law student at the University of Leicester and this is the story of how I got my nose pierced.

I have been interested in piercings since an early age; however my parents wouldn't let me get my ears pierced until I was 14. My dad's a lawyer and my mum's a head teacher at a primary school and although they're not conservative in a political sense they are about piercings- they do not approve of more than one ear piercing in each ear. I really wanted more ear piercings but I didn't want to ask them as I knew they would disapprove.

When I was 16 I went on holiday with friends to Newquay and decided to get my second holes in my ears. I loved them and decided to hide them for a little while under my hair once I got back to London (where I live when I'm not at Uni). My mum spotted the second set of earrings after a couple of days, got pretty upset about it and grounded me saying that only 'working class' girls had more than one set of earrings. To my surprise my parents didn't make me take the studs out so it was totally worth it. Next up was a helix piercing a year later, this time I went to a professional and got it done with a needle as I had read a lot of bad things about getting a cartilage piercing with a gun. At that time my hair covered my ears so I could hide the earring from my parents. When I eventually showed them it had healed so they couldn't do much about it anyway. Soon after I showed my parents my helix I got a third set of holes in my earlobes which again my parents (especially my mum) got upset about but allowed me to keep.

Since I was really young, probably around 8, I thought that nose piercings look really pretty, especially small and subtle studs. I had always wanted one but my mum often said how much she disliked them so I didn't pluck up the courage to get it done until I was 19. Over the Christmas holidays I decided that I would get it done as soon as I got back to University in Leicester.

I told my friends that I was planning on getting it pierced and received mostly positive reactions. My best friend Charlotte said she would come with me to give me some moral support, but she didn't want anything done herself.

We went to a place called Graze Tattooing in Oadby which was only a walk from my Halls of Residence. I was asked by a man what I would like to which I replied that I would like my left nostril pierced. He pointed out the jewellery available and I picked a small diamond stud. After signing a contract I was ready was ready to be pierced. I was getting quite nervous at this point so it was a great help to have Charlotte with me. The piercer marked my nose with a pen and asked if I was happy with the placement. When I told him it was fine he put a tube up my nose and pierced me. He then inserted the nose screw which I found hurt more than the actual piercing; overall though I was surprised at how little it hurt, I was expecting a lot worse pain.

When I looked in the mirror I instantly fell in love! I thought it looked amazing! I thanked the piercer and left. When I got back to my Halls I received nothing but positive comments, everyone really liked it! I then rang my mum to tell her that I got my nose pierced. She sounded really upset and said that no law firm would employ someone with a nose stud. It upset me that I had upset my mum but explained to her that it was something I really wanted.

The next time I went home was around three months later. Both my parents expressed their distaste for my nose piercing but acknowledged that it was my decision. I kept good care of my piercing and didn't experience any difficulties which was a relief. It's been a year now since I got my nose pierced and I still absolutely love it! For the first week or so I did feel a bit self conscious of it as I felt that people were staring at it but a year later if I go out without a stud in my nose I feel naked!

I would absolutely recommend this piercing to anyone. Going by my own personal experience the pain of getting it pierced wasn't to bad, when I take the stud out the hole isn't very noticeable at all and when it is in it is so pretty!
