My piercing journey began about when I was a sophomore in high school. I began to see many piercings on TV, in magazines, and on the Internet. I knew about some piercings, like the lobe, nostril, helix, and navel, but I never really knew about the more extreme ones. My mother has a nostril piercing and I always thought she was the coolest mom for having one. And then one day while I was looking at it, I decided, "I want one too!"

So cut to about a year later, during the spring of my sophomore year. I had gotten my lobes pierced for a second time during my freshman year. Then that nostril piercing popped back into my head. I began to wonder if I could just do it myself. So I found one of the studs that I had been pierced with and went into the kitchen. I grabbed an ice cube and some paper towels. I went back into the bathroom, and placed the stud where I wanted it pierced. To be honest, I really didn't think this through; I just kind of went on a rampage (if that's what I could call it).
I numbed my nose with the ice for about 10 minutes, and then began to (slowly) push the stud through. It actually didn't hurt too badly. When I got it done, I was so excited and had a bit of an adrenaline rush. I took a couple minutes to get myself together, and then gathered up the courage to go show my mom. When I showed it to her, she was shocked, and not happy. I was so upset that I had to take it out because I thought it looked so cute. (NOTE: don't self pierce, especially with dull studs that they pierce your ears with. It's not a good idea. Like I said, I didn't really think it through, but if you're going to self-pierce, do it right. I suppose I was kind of lucky that nothing went wrong. Remember people, sterilization and all that good stuff is a must.)
So, now, fast-forward to summer of 2006. I had just gotten out of school for the year, and my need for a nostril piercing was overwhelming. I thought about it all day, every day. I asked my mom one more time if I could get it done. She finally gave up and said yes. Now, I go to a Catholic high school, and they don't allow piercings other than ears, so I was forced to get it done during the summer to give it enough time to heal.
So the day I went to get the piercing, I actually wasn't nervous (I guess because I had technically done it before). When my mom and I walked into the shop, I thought it was gorgeous. It was very very clean and it smelled really good too. The girl at the desk was really nice and she helped me pick out my jewelry. My mom then began having second thoughts about me getting it done, but I refused to leave there without a piece of jewelry in my nose. So I forked over about $50 and the girl went over the aftercare instructions with me. They didn't seem too complicated. Just like the ones they give you when you get your ears pierced.
When I finally got into the room and sat on the dentist chair, my piercer introduced himself and spotted my mom standing in the doorway. Then he began talking about how he loved my mom's hair color. I think that actually kind of calmed my mom's nerves down, because she actually cracked a smile, and she hadn't smiled the entire time we were there.
Anyway, he marked my nose and got in the perfect spot the first time. Then he cleaned my nose, and saw the look on my face after having a q-tip shoved up it and made a joke like, "Ooh, bet that's the first time you ever had a q-tip shoved up your nose like that." I actually almost had to sneeze because I think some of the cotton went up my nose. But anyway, next he put the receiving tube inside. This was when my mom started to get freaked, so she turned her head. He shoved the needle through and a couple tears dropped. But no blood. He finished by popping the jewelry in, and we were on our way!
My healing experience was very good, I must say. I've had no trouble with my piercing at all. I changed the ring about 2 months after I got it pierced. Now I have a very teeny-tiny little diamond stud in it. I have received so many compliments from my friends and other people. My mom even said she loves it on me. I will definitely be getting more piercings, including a navel piercing this summer, and my labret when I graduate! To anyone who is thinking about getting their nostril done: go ahead and do it! It honestly barely hurt me when I had it done, and I had no problems with it. Just make sure you take of it meticulously. Happy piercing!
