I had been itching for a new piercing for about 2 months now, and this was promised to me as a Christmas gift. I decided on a septum after thinking it over for about a year, during which time I considered the risks and benefits. I had to take into consideration the chances of it ripping out and the way people may see me differently. There's also the pain factor since it's allegedly a very painful place to be pierced. And then I came upon the septum's magical ability to be hidden which of course is a major plus since I am a very bashful person to begin with.

Of course by the time I got to the piercing studio I found out the piercer wasn't in.. bummer.. so I went to the movies instead and decided to try again another day. So today, about six days later I gave it another go, my buddy and I went to go catch a bus into the city to the studio. We were there 5 minutes after it opened and began filling out the papers and having our ID cards xeroxed.
Then Jay, my piercer called the 2 of us to the back room where he asked which of us wanted to go first. I always volunteer to go first no matter who I am with for piercings. So I get myself seated in the dentist chair and look at the artwork on the wall for a moment while he's telling us about the aftercare and washing his hands, preparing his tools and such. Then he comes over to me with a wadded up tissue and begins to clean my nostrils. I was so embarrassed and started to giggle while he was doing that, and because my friend was making jokes and I couldn't hold my laughter. I felt somehow relaxed by the fact that he cleaned them instead of having me clean them. It show's he's comfortable and makes me comfortable. Then he began feeling up my septum with his fingers to find the right spot, which is apparently a thin piece of tissue between 2 bits of cartilage. Next, he made a purple line along the bottom of my nose. Afterwards he got out the clamps. He didn't use septum clamps like I had read about in other experiences, just regular clamps with rubber band around them. Some had said that the clamps were the worst part, so I was waiting for the monumental pain to hit me and the clamps didn't hurt at all. These were fitted in the right spot that he had felt out earlier.
Now he asked me to take some slow, deep breaths while he lined the needle up right. His voice is soothing and makes you feel relaxed. About 3 of these sets later the needle passed through the tissue and it wasn't anything like I had imagined. It hurt, I won't lie about that. It make me wince and I felt like I needed to breathe or sneeze- it's not the pain I expected. It stung and I felt like I had to sneeze but not like I was going to actually sneeze. The intensity wore off after a little while and I opened my eyes to feel the tears rolling down my face. My piercer has always been gentle with the jewellery and it never hurts when he puts it in, he's got the magic touch. He put the chair down to the floor and handed me a tissue to wipe my face and gave me a mirror to check out my new apparatus. I smiled and thanked him. It was quite straight and the circular barbell looks just dandy on me!
My buddy got another pair of lobes done on him, and they're always easy nothing too eventful. They bled a little this time but still were easy. I made sure to tip my piercer because I felt very impressed and happy. The busses had stopped running by this time so we had to walk home. It isn't exactly warm out in January and the cold air stung my new piercing a little bit but nothing too bad. So my friend turns to me during the hour walk home and says "if you ever want me to be in the room when you're giving birth, remind me to take a few shots first." He says my face scrunched up and I looked like I was in a lot of pain. I don't even remember the pain right now and it's been 5 hours since I got it done.
I honestly feel that if you want something bad enough then the pain shouldn't really concern you since it's only temporary. How long does it take for a second to pass? Not that long! If you want this or any other piercing I say suck it up and go for it.
