I've wanted my septum pierced for about three years now. I loved the way they looked, and I have a very symmetrical face and small nose, so I decided it was the piercing for me. I finally turned 18 and had some money, so I decided now was the time. This week, two friends and I went to Providence, and we found a piercing parlor named Evolution downtown. The store was small and white, and looked extremely clean. They had a huge selection of jewelry and gauges. It was nice.

I wanted my septum pierced, my friend wanted her Monroe, and the third wanted her helix. He individually took us to pick out our jewelry, and then extensively went over after care procedures.
I elected to be pierced first so I could get it over with. The longer I stayed in the store, the more likely it was that I would back out at the last minute. I went into the curtained room, and the piercer introduced herself and explained what she was going to do. She began by cleaning my nose, first with alcohol and then with some sort of bacterial stuff. This was the worst part of the experience, having a Q-Tip so far up my nose was very uncomfortable. Next, she marked the spot on one side of my nose and told me to lay down with my head hanging slightly off the chair.
The piercer told me what she was doing through out. She put the receiving tube on one side of my nose and told me to take a deep breath. She told me to exhale, and as I did she pushed the needle into the receiving tube. When the needle went through, I didn't even realize she had pierced it, it was not the major pain I had been expecting. It hardly hurt; I had to ask her if she had done it yet. There was no blood or pain, even when she put the jewelry in. She had some trouble getting one of the balls on, but that was the worst of it.
Afterwards, she explained to me that I have a crooked nose. It turns out; internally my nose is a little crooked, so she did the best she could. The piercing is a bit crooked, but for the most part it looks good and I'm very glad I finally got it done. One of the reasons I was putting it off was because I was afraid of the pain, the only other piercings I have are one 7/16th gauges on each ear.
My friends had an equally easy time getting pierced. The piercers and tattooist all seemed to do an effective job, and the store was very busy in the time we were there. I liked it. The minute I left the store a man complimented my septum. I was glad to see other people liked it.
The piercing has yet to really bother me, so far it has caused little to no pain. I am aware of it; it is a bit sore around the area, but nothing too noticeable. I'm very comfortable with it. Cleaning it has been very easy as well; the piercing parlor had given each of us a pamphlet according to our piercings, as well as extra information and an opportunity to ask questions. They also provided us with gauze and saline solution.
I'm still weird about things like blowing my nose, and I have really bad allergies so I will probably use nose sprays in the future, despite the fact that there should be nothing in your nose if you have a septum piercing. I just have to remember to be careful when I'm doing things like getting dressed or sleeping. It's also pretty annoying to have to flip it up whenever I go to work, especially since it's a new piercing and a little tender, not to mention I'm paranoid about infection and would rather not be touching it so much.
My biggest concern about my septum piercing is the slight crookedness. I'm hoping it will look less crooked once I get different jewelry. Tomorrow I have to go to a local piercing parlor to get one of the balls removed, since the piercer screwed it too tight and it's too hard to flip up with the balls on. Hopefully they will let me know if my septum will be permanently crooked.
According to my piercer, it will take 3-5 months for my septum to heal. Hopefully I will feel comfortable with changing my ring sooner, because I feel like this jewelry is too big. I'm generally happy with the outcome, I wished the piercer had been friendlier because I was nervous but I made out fine regardless. Although I am concerned about the crookedness, I'm glad I finally got my septum, and I love it. I had no pain, and if I decide to take it out, I will have no noticeable scarring on my face. The perfect facial piercing.
