I have been fascinated by body modification from a very young age, since my first ear piercing. Since then I have acquired a wide array of ear piercings. The year I turned sixteen; that summer I got my first 'real' body mod, a bellybutton ring.
The next summer I felt like I was due for a new hole. I decided on a nostril ring. The pleading began. I told my parents that I wasn't asking for a giant spike through my lip, I was asking for a dainty gemstone in my nose. After approximately six million speeches about perception and regretting it when I'm forty, they agreed. I was ecstatic, but I also had another plan up my sleeve.
My mother had recently lost her goal amount of weight through Weight Watchers. While doing some celebratory and necessary shopping I told her that I thought she needed a sassy new fashion accessory i.e. a nose ring, to go with her sassy new figure. She laughed at me and told me she would think about it.
I badgered her about it for a week straight. She never said yes, but she never said no either. Saturday rolled around, just as I was about to give up hope, my mom leaned over and whispered to me "Get your ID, we're doing it today, now." My face lit up like a beacon and I sprung out of my chair to grab my stuff. From the couch my dad hollers "What the heck was that?" quick as anything my mom comes back with "I asked Lauren if she would come to the Laundromat with me." After leaving we both began to giggle
because we had left the laundry behind and Dad was too engrossed in his game of golf to notice.
We headed down the street to Creative Images, my favorite shop. We trusted the piercer there because she pierced my bellybutton and it came out beautifully. I excitedly let her know that we were both getting our noses pierced.
"Who's going first?" she asked. My mother and I looked at each other. "I'll go, because if it hurts her, I'm out of here." said my mom. I retorted with an enthusiastic "Thanks for the moral support Ma."
We were lead into the piercing room and my mom hopped into the chair. Like lightening it was over. I laughed out loud because the piercer moved to the side and I saw my mom sitting there with a giant needle sticking diagonally through her face. The piercer replaced the needle with a piece of jewelry and my mom had a sparkly new addition that she was clearly thrilled about.
My turn, I was more nervous than I thought I was going to be. I thought, "My bellybutton was a piece of cake, why should this be any different?" I relaxed a little because my mom reassured me that "it was just a pinch." I took a deep breath and sat in the chair.
This was not just a pinch. This was a searing, eye watering pain. This was a blood running down my face, wanting to yell obscenities type of pain. But it was over as fast as it started, and I too had a glittery new addition. I loved it.
I bled for a good hour after that. We eventually returned home to pick up the laundry. By then my dad was asleep and didn't notice us leaving again.
When we got back from doing laundry he still didn't notice. We laughed like crazy about it all night. He was so oblivious that he didn't notice until we ate dinner that night. And he was still more preoccupied with why his golf socks werent dry.
It's not the most common or most recommended way for mothers and daughters to bond, but it was our way. I would do it again in a heart beat; even though it hurt like hell.
Since then i have aquired 2g plugs in both ears, 5 assorted 16g ear lobe piercings, both tragi, my belly button, my nose, my septum, and my clitoral hood. All of which i love.
I would highly reccomend getting pierced with someone you love, its a great bonding experience, and a great topic of conversation at family parties. I am now known as the "adult corrupter"
I would also highly reccomend Celestial Image Body piercing for anyone who is in the old orchard beach area during the summer months.
And for anyone who is looking to get a piercing but theyre not sure, my advice is to go for it, be yourself and do it up the way you wanna do it.
Im already looking into piercing something new.
