I'll start by explaining to the boys why I was worried getting pierced when I was pre-menstrual. The few days before your period, you feel pain more, its a bad time to get your legs waxed or to pluck your eyebrows, let alone get pierced. I only realized I was getting pierced just before my period that morning, and I was hoping above all else that it wouldn't make it any more painful than it had to be.

Now, onto the piercing. I decided that for my 16th Birthday, I wanted to get my first non-ear 'proper piercing'. My boyfriend had recently had his septum done and said he thought it would look cute on me, so I got to seriously thinking about that. The issue is, my family ( with the exception of my parents ) are pretty anti-piercing,so I needed something quite easy to hide. A septum piercing with a retainer seemed the way to go! I researched the procedure, and I reckoned I'd be able to handle it and hide it( or at least hoped so...).

I was nothing but excited up until the day after my birthday, when I was due to get the piercing done. Then I started getting very very scared. I bought a Subway sandwich that morning,so I'd have some food in me, and I had my Birthday cake with me, because I was bringing it back from my boyfriends, and for a sugar boost afterwards! I was so nervous,as my boyfriend had told me it was quite a painful piercing for him, but I know I'm better with pain than him. My body's equipped to deal with childbirth,I can cope with a needle through my nose!

I got to the studio, and the very clean disinfectant smell made me feel slightly light-headed, which was good! I filled out the consent form ( the first time I could write my real details! ) and the piercer told me to come through to the piercing room. I dragged my boyfriend in for moral support, and sat on the table. The piercer wiped my nose with some stuff that made me dizzy, then put the clamps on. At that point I panicked and tried to push the piercers hands away. My boyfriend laughed at me, then came over and held my hand. I said to the piercer "you realize I'm gonna scream and probably swear..." The piercer told me I wouldn't ( in quite an impatient way! ) then told me to do the breathe-in-breathe-out thing, and asked me to close my eyes. I said I couldn't close my eyes, and I'd be much more comfortable with them open. The pierced told me it would be better if i couldn't see the needle go in,but I disagreed. I was slightly scared of feeling out of control. He eventually said that was ok. As he stuck the needle in, I screamed "Oh Holy shit! That's really... painful.... Oh,no it's not... cool." I barely felt it. Even though I was pre-menstrual and my body should be more receptive to pain, it barely hurt at all! I then took great pleasure in laughing at my boyfriend for saying his septum was really painful. He kept flicking mine saying "does this hurt?" and I was telling him no. He then went into raptures about how cute I looked.

I was so glad that it hurt so little, and thats's really encouraged me to get the rest of the piercings I want. A lot of doubts have been quietened and I now realize that the thought of pain is worse than actual pain.

I would like to spend a moment singing the praises of the wonderful septum piercing. Not only is it a very easy piercing, it has a low chance of infecting, it looks great, it can make you look tough, cute or quirky and it's very easy to hide if needs be. When I first got mine done,I had the retainer down,so it was visible. I then saw my uncle walking up to me,and I managed to flip the retainer up into my nose, while pretending I was scratching it! It's so convenient and easy! The night I got it pierced, I wiped my nose and somehow knocked the retainer out. I ran to the bathroom, and managed to get it straight back in without it hurting at all. It's also unusual enough to get you a fair amount of stares and a few comments ( some friendly compliments, some people saying "but why would you do that?").

I'm so glad I got my septum pierced rather than anything else,it looks cute, and will look cuter once I've put a small ball closure ring in it! I'm really pleased with the piercer too,he was very good at calming my hysteria! If you are thinking about getting your septum pierced, go for it, it's fantastic! And if you are thinking of getting anything else pierced, remember that the thought of pain is worse than pain itself!
